The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies OS Thread | 700M OS passed

Recommended Posts

$40m more OS would give $704 OS, pretty much the same than previous entries... with horrible exchange rates. Very good OS run. And it would complete the only trilogy with every movie over 700 OS. I wanted every movie over billion, but well, less is nothing.

good WOM kicked in! still 8.6 on gewara

this actually could survive the loss of screens

This can hold well even with another big movie opening (MJ will underperform imo even with 3D I doubt it will get many screens)

New Line-MGM’s The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies (pictured) delivered $22.4m from more than 9,500 screens in 57 markets as the running total soared to $664.2m.

Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth finale plundered a further $20.2m (Rmb 126.3m) in its second session for $92.6m (Rmb 575.8m) as the film became Warner Bros’ third biggest in history.

After China, Germany ranks as the second biggest market on $78.6m, followed by the UK on $64.1m, France on $45.9m, Russia on $30.2m, Australia on $27.8m, South Korea on $22.1m, Spain on $19.8m, Brazil on $19.5m, Italy on $17.3m, Mexico on $17.2m and Sweden on $16.6m.

Thanks to strong numbers in China, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies reached $900 million worldwide this weekend.

It joins the other two Hobbit movies—and the last twoLord of the Rings movies—in that $900-million-plus club.

In its second weekend in China, the final chapter in theHobbit trilogy added $20.2 million, which brings its total there to an estimated $92.6 million. Overall, it has now earned $664.2 million overseas and $916 million worldwide.

Ultimately, it could wind up passing The Desolation of Smaug's $960 million total; however, reaching $1 billion now seems to be out of the question.

China also buoyed “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.” The Middle-earth finale pulled in $22.4 million across 57 markets, but the People’s Republic accounted for the largest slice, amounting to $20.2 million. The film has made nearly $100 million in China alone, and its worldwide haul stands at $915.9 million.

How 'The Hobbit's' Billion-Dollar Box-Office Haul Shrank by $90M

By most measures, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is a runaway success. The final film in Peter Jackson's Middle-earth saga drew at least as many foreign moviegoers as the previous two installments, which grossed $1 billion and $960 million, respectively. But thanks to plunging exchange rates around the globe, Warner Bros. and MGM ultimately will take in nearly $90 million less than they planned on receiving.

The 15 percent drop is the most dramatic example of the precarious financial position Hollywood studios find themselves in because of shifting currencies. Battle of the Five Armies had grossed north of $620 million offshore as of Jan. 29 for a worldwide total of $867 million. Were it not for the exchange-rate debacle, the film could have crossed $1 billion.

In December 2013, one euro equaled $1.38. A year later, that dropped 11 percent. As of Jan. 29, one euro equaled just $1.13. Things are even worse in crisis-ridden Russia, where studios are getting back 50 percent less than they did a year ago. Studios also are seeing diminished returns in Australia and Latin America.

"We've never seen a drop in so many currencies at once," says Nancy Carson, executive vp at Warner Bros. International. "We're getting hit everywhere."

Russia, a booming moviegoing market, particularly for big-budget spectacles, is even more of a sore point. The Russian ruble has collapsed against the dollar because of a sharp dive in oil prices and economic sanctions against Moscow. Ratings agency Standard & Poor's recently downgraded Russia's sovereign credit rating to junk status. "It is a serious problem," says Fox co-president of worldwide marketing and distribution Paul Hanneman. "When we opened Exodus: God and Kings in Russia in early January, we did like $8 million. Maybe we would have done $12 million at the previous exchange rate." Warners says it got back $25.5 million for Battle of the Five Armies versus $45 million for the second Hobbit, even though attendance didn't decline.

There's a similar if somewhat less dramatic story in Latin America, where the Brazilian real and Mexican peso each has fallen 12 percent against the dollar. "As a result, international could be an increasing source of volatility going forward," Janney Montgomery analyst Tony Wible wrote in a recent report.

Major studios aren't the only ones suffering. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1outperformed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in both France and Germany, but dollar revenue dipped in both territories.

BoxOffice @BoxOffice

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES: $686.4M Overseas Total / $939.3M Global Total #TheHobbit

$21 million more to pass DoS. Not a guarantee, will be close. Another $8-$15m from China I recon, so will probably need some help from the last few screens it's showing on in other nations.
