I still have zero clue as to why Maleficent is holding so well. The WOM is nothing special, and the reviews are VERY mixed. To me, it was a good/decent movie. The end. It's not even the only "family film" out there. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is getting significantly better reception, yet here's Maleficent doing significantly better at the box office. This summer had no rules. With that said, good numbers for both Purge and Apes. Apes should still win the weekend though, which makes me happy.

How is Dragon getting better reception?  Maleficent has almost caught up to it in dailies,  So you can hate the film all you want (I despised it as well) but you can deny how well it is doing and how well it is liked.

Plus, I think Dragon managed to only appeal to male children and cinema freaks with its marketing, while Maleficent appealed to females as a whole (Jolie), and the entire child demo (scary/cool looking enough trailers for children to want to see it but not the point that it scares them away from it).

I thought it was decent. I just didn't think it was the kind of movie that would have these legs. Edited by superduperm

Disappointing number for Sex Tape. There is no reason why a movie with this cast and a raunchy premise shouldn't have broken out in a weak summer like this.

Good expansion for Boyhood. $27-28,000 PTA from 33 theaters in its second weekend is impressive.

Sex tape didn't look good at all. And there was something about the trailer that screams lifetime comedy movie.

But with Cameron Diaz in it, I thought it would open up to at least $20m. I don't really care for the guy who plays the lead though.

Problem is these are family movies, most families don't go to IMDb and RT to grade the movies after they see them.  How much the child wants to see the movie is more important than if the parent wants to in these cases.

I despise Maleficent and it clearly has better reception than Dragon.  It will have a better multiplier and it is dropping minisculely every week.....if that isn't the best barometer for how much people are liking it then what is?

Glad to see that Sex Tape is flopping.  Another moronic attempt at comedy goes down.  Blended, Million Ways, Tammy, Sex Tape, etc.  I know that Tammy and Think Like a Man 2 had low budgets so they will still be profitable, but they are still coming in lower than expected.

:D

I didnt see Malifecent and I don't plan to until maybe Red Box and while as an X-Men fan it sucks to see it getting out grossed, it is good to see SOMETHING this summer doing a lot better than expected. So go, Mal, help redeem the summer a bit.

And regardless of what this board wants to think Maleficent has great word of mouth among the general populace. I have yet to hear someone in real life say that the movie sucks and at this point most of my circle (50+ People ) has seen the film. I still don't personally know what the movie did right but it's obviously something.

How do you know its WOM is nothing special ?

- If the drops have been consistently soft despite competition all round (female geered and children greered movies have been released since then with no noticeable negative effects on it so far);

- If for 8 weeks in a row it has been able to close in the gap it had between Oz and itself on its opening weekend.

THEN, It only means for one, that the size of its target audience is bigger than a lot in here want to acknowledge and that this target loved it to the point of giving it a great wom sustained by a high level of repeating viewings.

That's the only explanation wether some like the movie or not.  There is just a big size of the audience (doesn't matter their profile, they are as worthy consumers as any other) that loved it and keep on coming  back to watch it.

Mom and her cousin both liked Maleficent. It is getting better word of mouth than people on here think.
