This is favorite marvel CBM to date, a truly delightful film from beginning to end with wit, humor and action aplenty. My expectations for this was pretty low going in, the trailer leading me to believe that this would be just another mindless comic relief film. On this occasion I can gladly say I was 100% wrong! The humor is just the fabric of the movie that is carefully woven throughout the film hitting you when you least expect it. The dance especially, performed by Peter Quill to distract ronan near the film's climax had me and everyone at my viewing rolling around laughing :P

The music too was truly an "awesome mix". I didn't recognize any of the songs but they set the mood of the film right from the start. Scenes that could have been heavy and serious was instead fun and light which I believe is the main goal of the film.

There were a number of surprisingly heartfelt moments too, mostly involving groot. The scene where he uses small flower lights(?) to lighten the room was pretty special and also when he sacrifices himself to save his friends was another tender moment.

Marvel truly are at the top of their game at the moment, can't wait to see what they do with the sequel :)

Rating: a solid A. an enjoyable summer blockbuster that will have you laughing and leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling at the end.

It's stylish and colorful and has good character dynamics and relationship building. Pratt, Saldana and Bautista were pretty great.

But none of it is particularly surprising. Which is weird for a movie with a talking tree and a talking raccoon.

Never had I ever thought that fucking Batista would end up being a scene stealer, especially in this of all movies. When he returns to wrestling they should just bring him in as Drax the Destroyer and act the exact same way as he does in this movie.

Total blast. Hilarity throughout, fantastic effects, strong performances and characters, everything is great. Probably the best Marvel Studios movie ever.

Loved it. Very very funny and sweet as can be. The ensemble is great, Star-Lord and Rocket are terrific characters and Gamora and Drax steal their fair share of scenes. But make no mistake, this is Groot's movie. People are gonna complain about the generic villains but they worked for me, by the end they're part of the joke. Anyway, gimme dat sequel

I'd say all characters were as funny as each other (Gamora aside)

This film will separate your boring humourless people from the rest. Whoever can give this film a negative review or not enjoy it at all is someone you wouldn't want as a friend. I'm being deadly serious.Btw this film was so much funnier and exciting than Avengers.

Hrm... This is difficult to grade.

There are a ton of things I really love about the film. It is funny, perhaps moreso than any previous Marvel film. Quill, Rocket, and Groot are all fantastic, and Drax is quite a surprise for a character who I expected to be the muscle (and anger). I liked him a lot too.

Gamora didn't feel quite right, even though Zoe Saldana is excellent, as always, and she's still a fun character. I didn't quite feel the depth of her character history, here, but that could be the result of how much I'm a fan of the Abnett and Lanning series.

I felt the worldbuilding was handled in a pretty lackluster way. The movie didn't give any real depth to the alien civilizations, and didn't have me caring too much about either side in the conflict. Ronana, in particular, comes off pretty poorly here. There wasn't any nuance to him. Hell, there wasn't really any reason for his actions. He was a bad guy for the express reason that there should be a bad guy. Compared to his comics version (where he's typically antagonistic, but there is reason to his actions), it felt like a let down.

Mostly, it seemed like the film was trying to do too much. In addition to introducing a team of heroes and having them on an adventure, there were several moments of cramming in a lot about multiple space-faring civilizations and fantastic locations, and on and on where few of these things were given the time and care to really get the audience invested. Still, that's a tricky balance to get right, and when the film gets things right, it really works well.

As far as the ugly, the trend of action scenes in Marvel films being pretty forgettable continues. Some of the effects-heavy bits were fine, but others were a confusing jumble, with poorly thought out color variations.

Musically, the film is an odd duck. Much of it hinges on the use of classic rock tunes that Quill plays on his walkman. All of that is great. However, there's also a score, and, again, continuing the Marvel trend, it's serviceable, but pretty forgettable.

As for rating. The issues I have probably say I should rate it a 3, but given how much fun I had and how much I really do like the characters and the comic, I'm going to go with a 4.

(In comparison to other Phase 2 films: better than CA2, worse than Thor 2, about on par with IM3.)

CA2 had elements that I liked, but the quality of the direction and script was pretty lackluster. It's perfectly fine as a film to watch, but doesn't sit as anything I'm going to love. Marvel does pretty enjoyable films well. They make sure their films don't suck. But they rarely cross over into great, IMO.

Besides that, I can only rate films based on my personal emotional investment in them. My tastes probably won't align with other people most of the time. If you like the films differently than me, that's cool.

But Thor 2 sucked

Okay saying it sucked probably is going too far, but better than Cap 2 and GOTG?? I didn't think anyone would share that opinion.

My opinions about the MCU run pretty far against the grain. I didn't find The Avengers to be terribly compelling or well done, for instance. It's a bit better than CA2, and a lot better than IM2, but worse than any of their other films.

Even so, for any of these films, the number of people who see it is going to be at least 15m or so, DOM. It's pretty likely that at least a few of those people feel roughly similar to me about them.

I enjoyed this movie very much. It was a lot of fun, it was colorful. The Guardians themselves, although they did not have much flashy powers, managed to carry the action well, and they had excellent chemistry with each other that elevates their individual performances even more. There is an okay balance of humor and seriousness, although I do think the humor was unnecessary and came across as "trying hard to be funny" at certain parts, as was some of the old school music. The storyline was pretty predictable to be honest, but that didn't really hurt the film since it has a lot of other good points.

The visual effects were out of this world ;) good, especially when looking at the budget that they had for this movie, although I wish we could have seen the worlds fleshed out more, instead of visiting only a small area and then heading to the next.

Overall, a really good and enjoyable movie.

In terms of CBMs this year, this is still behind DOFP and Cap 2 for me, not because I have an X-Men avatar and signature, but simply because although I appreciate a fun movie like this, I prefer the darker themes of those other 2 movies.

8.5/10 or A-

That was so much fun. Hilarious. Full house. Everyone loved it. Credits rolling and noones left their seat. A women behind me is jokingly remonstrating with a friend. "You never leave a Marvel movie early."

My cinema was pretty full and me and my mates are the only people in the cinema to leave when the credits rolled up. Its like everyone watching a marvel movie knows they need to stay to the end.

Very moving, very funny, very awesome! I loved it! It's easily my favorite Marvel movie the only exception being The Avengers, I might say it at least ties it. It looked amazing, the 3D was okay at times but nothing more though. The casting is spot on, every member of GotG is exceptional in their roles and as a group. The chemistry is the best I've seen within Marvel. They had some great and very humorous moments. Everything worked very well together.

A+
