narniadis
Here's what happened last year on the Wednesday and Thursday of Thanksgiving week. As you can see, some movies dropped on Wednesday. grim22
That appears to be where it is currently headed unless it develops late legs. That's always possible because for comparison Frozen took even longer than this for its extraordinary legs to show up. Don't get me wrong, Big Hero 6 won't have legs anywhere near that good, but Frozen's weren't any better at the same point, so given the general audience reaction there is still a chance that Big Hero 6 could do even better than it has been doing. At this point the movie underperforming--by any reasonable standard--seems very unlikely, although it will face a test against direct competition this Thanksgiving weekend. Frozen had the 12 days of Christmas box office still to come. It went from 177M on 21st December to 277M on 2nd January. It earned 100M over the 12 days, and reached 300M by the time the first weekend of the new year was done. BH6 won't have the big boost that comes from New Years as it will be down to low dailies by that point.
Melvin Frohike
Frozen had the 12 days of Christmas box office still to come. It went from 177M on 21st December to 277M on 2nd January. It earned 100M over the 12 days, and reached 300M by the time the first weekend of the new year was done. BH6 won't have the big boost that comes from New Years as it will be down to low dailies by that point. My comparison was in no way intended to be direct or of the same scale, for that matter--my only point here is that even extraordinary legs, using Frozen as an extreme example for illustration, can take a fair amount of time to develop (and it's not always gradual, either--in fact, it was quite abrupt in this case). The direct comparison is between Frozen and other Thanksgiving releases, with Tangled being a good example--Frozen took several weeks to prove that it could hold better than Tangled, but eventually it did (and how!). Accordingly, there is still a chance that Big Hero 6 could prove to hold better than, say, Wreck-It Ralph, which also opened in early November--although it's bigger than the latter in general, it hasn't held better so far, but like Frozen versus Tangled shows, it may do so yet (too early to call). If it doesn't, then we're probably looking at a final DOM gross of about $210-220M, but if it gets stronger legs under it within the next week or so, then even $250M could still be in play despite its lower-than-expected (by many) OW gross. Melvin Frohike
Tangled had that boost too, to a lesser extent. Essentially, the Thanksgiving weekend is best to open an animated film if longevity is what you seek. Right, but under essentially the same circumstances, some movies still end up having much stronger legs than others, and in some such cases these stronger legs don't reveal themselves for several weeks, as in the case of Frozen versus Tangled--Frozen was bigger, but regarding stronger legs it showed nothing for quite some time. With Tangled's OW multiplier Frozen would have grossed $278M DOM, but instead it grossed $401M, so obviously something happened besides the same holidays. I don't expect anything like this for Big Hero 6, of course, but its legs could potentially show some improvement even at this stage.
Melvin Frohike
Big Hero 6 - 3,365 locations - $7,125 average - 23.98 / 33.23 - 174.43 total That would be pretty tremendous--for that matter even $20M for Friday-Sunday would be pretty tremendous--but personally I wouldn't predict or expect something like that.
