Please point out ,aside from action scnes, what Bay does well as a director.....

He blows stuff up real good, but when it comes to charecters he is horrid.

I cried watching Armageddon. People love that film as a cheesy emotional blockbuster

Michael bay can actually nail characters in his movies because he makes them like real life people with a sense of humour which is common in day to day life. Bad boys 1 & 2, Armageddon and transformers 1 are very popular movies still to this day and id say this is down to how he treats the characters.

You dont like him,  i can respect that, but to call one of the biggest directors in hollywood who has proven time and time again to be popular with general audiences looking to be entertained for a few hours a hack is simply wrong

I imagine it didn't age well but I think there is some character he pull off ok to well, at the time I really love the parents in the first transformer and the main trio in Pain&Gain, well I just really loved Pain&Gain in general and the musicality of is characters (was perfectly cast to achieve that)

It is hard to have an argument against what you are saying and I was not able to finish Transformer 4 nor Transformer 5, it is how much value one put at the kinetic and scope Bay is able to create and in "vulgar auteurism".

Everyone has seen this at this point I would imagine, that show is strength:

Maybe is biggest argument that he is not an hack is how many copycat that tried to do what he do did completely failed at getting close to him, he is clearly gifted to an elite level in what he do.

"Pearl Harbor' is the Bay film that caused me to give up on him. I see little reason for changing my mind with his films since.

The first Transformers film was goofy fun, but I suspect the Spielberg influence was responsible for that.

"No One Ever Went Broke Underestimating the Taste of the American Public"...P.t. Barnum (allegedly).

It astounds me that people actually use the "Popularity Equals A Good Movie" argument.  By that argument the "Twilight" films are masterpieces of Cinema....

"The Masses Are Asses" is, sadly, an often true statement.

I don't think you understand what hack means.

A hack is someone who isn't good at what they do, Bay's job is literally to make big blockbusters that make studios money and he seems pretty good at that, are you sure you know what hack means sir?

Lets face it its not just Americans, they are worldwide hits. Also most here are huge movie buffs that look for more in their movies than breazy entertainment, the masses aren't like that. To call someone who appreciates some of Bays films an 'ass' is just rude and out of touch. Christopher Nolan as admitted to enjoying some of Bay's work, is he an ass too? Masses dont go to the theatres to find deep meanings all the time, some films are made for mild entertainment and that is exactly what Bay delivers. He is your guilty pleasure guy. Dont like him? Fair enough, dont watch his films then

hack  [hak]
noun
A person, as an artist or writer, who exploits, for money, his or her creative ability or training in the production of dull, unimaginative, and trite work; one who produces banal and mediocre work in the hope of gaining commercial success in the arts: As a painter, he was little more than a hack.

Hack tend to have commercial success.

Oh please you are using your own opinions as a fact, Transformers 1 was dull and Unimaginative? Plenty of people will disagree there. I for one had never seen anything like it prior and his characters related alot of teenage kids around age. He has a style people either love or hate but his films are far from dull and unimaginative. I could use this same extract against any big named director i dont like

Also hacks dont tend to have as much commercial success as Bay, hes probably top 5 most successful directors of all time. People must genuinely enjoy his dull, average and unimaginative shit, or maybe you guys just aren't the target audience

P.s hack is also referred to rushed, low quality jobs to get a quick buck, none of his movies seem rushed and of low quality

I think you are mistaken the conversation, I never called Bay an hack myself, was just pointing out the common definition of a hack filmmaker and that it was not mutually exclusive with being good at what you are trying do or commercial success.

Maybe but many would have

Ford, Hitchcock, Cameron, Chaplin, Lucas, Spielberg, Cecil B. DeMille above and some would have arguments for the Kapra, Zemeckis, Peter Jackson and some others.

Hack is more about calibrating your art into lower common denominator to achieve commercial success, please studios, etc... than being untalented, you need to be really good to be a hack that work for a long time usually.

During his Transformers 4 press tour in 2014, I remember Michael Bay saying a lot "I write my own action", obviously nobody really picked on the quote, proving my point that almost nobody has a fucking clue about how the modern VFX heavy/complex & lengthy set pieces blockbusters are done.

Most people have no fucking idea I swear.

Michael Bay was actually saying his set pieces weren't conceived by Pre-viz artists.
