He died before last's years Oscars and was included then.

Visuals are the only objective element. Acting is very subjective (I still can't believe some people actually don't like Redmayne's acting in JA) and so is the story, direction etc etc.

Not true. Even when it comes to visual FX, people have different expectations/opinions. Some people hate seeing a film that uses lots of CGI; others have a higher tolerance of it.
