How restrictive were your parents with regards to watching movies when growing up?

Recommended Posts

Were your parents very strict (ie you had to be 17 to watch an R rated movie), or were they more relaxed? My parents were pretty relaxed for the most part. My Dad was not shy about watching R rated action or Sci-Fi flicks around us. When we went to the video rental stores my parents usually didn't bat an eye with our choices in movies unless friends were around.

My parents really didn't care. In fact when I was four or five my dad sat me down to watch Halloween with him. By the time I was twelve I had an enormous horror DVD collection which my parents added to every weekend instead of giving me pocket money.Sixteen years later and Halloween is still my favourite movie.

My Dad went out of his way it seemed to take me to some of the most scariest and tense movies when growing up. My first R-Rated flick at age 8 was Aliens. I remember closing my eyes when the aliens came on because they were scary as a kid, and my dad would pull my hands away and tell me to stop being a pussy.

My mom was a pain in the ass until I got to high school. She used to go on this website, I think it was called "Screen It", that detailed every questionable moment in a movie and suggested age range. I remember getting in a huge fight with her when I was 12 or something about going to see What Lies Beneath (lol), I think I got my way in the end though.Once I got to high school she didn't care anymore.

They were super strict up until I was a teenager, then they pretty much stopped caring. There are only a couple of times i've seen my father get as mad as when he passed by the living room in the scene in the The Cable Guy where they were playing porno password. He stopped the movie right there and my brother who had rented it got in so much trouble  .

Not strict at all. Very sexual rated R movies like Basic Instinct and .9mm we weren't allowed to watch. But I watched all the typical Arnold stuff etc. We were already checking out porn mags at 10. I played doctor as a kid! My parents took us to Bordello of Blood for my 12th birdthday. I saw tons of Violence , Swearing, T&A before I was 'suppose' too.

The freakiest movie to me as a kid was, Boogieman, Never Ending Story, IT, Return to OZ and Labrynth all psychologically effed me! I thought the boogie man was in my closet, I thought the wolf was under my bed so I didn't put my feet down, When I walked home in the Rain in an area just like 'IT' I always thought about that effing clown. Return to OZ, those doods with wheels for hand scared me. Labrynth had some creatures in it that freaked me out.

Candyman was my sister scariest. She couldn't have mirrors in her room!

When I was old enough to finally rent horror films underage at a video store that didn't care , I wasn't affected by them. We rented candid candid candid camera! It's like a 'B' rated version of the TV series. My auntie walked in while me and my buddy were both totally enthralled as this readheaded chick with a huge bush was riding a horse naked ... so embarrassing at that age.

My mom would only take a shower with someone else in the house after she watched Psycho.

I recently went on Vacation to Pheonix. I swam in the pool at night by myself. I had the feeling that a shark or some type of see creature was about to rise up and git me!!! Thanks JAWS !!! Da Da, Da Da, Da da da da da!!! Went to Universal studios as well. Got a good look at jaws again on the Tram tour!

Ah, memories!

Not very. There aren't many R-Rated movies that I really cared for anyway. Half of them are stupid and just use gore or whatever for the shock factor and not for any proper purpose. I mean Australian R-Rated and not American R-Rated by the way. The ratings system in America is stupid. The Hangover R-Rated? Seriously? Here it's MA15+.

My parents weren't strict at all. One of my earliest movie experiences was a a drive in with Star Wars as the first feature and Psycho as the second. Maybe they thought I would be asleep :P

I do that to my 12 year old cousin. However, that is NOT how a father should treat his eight year old son. Ridiculous.
