As someone who's bored stupid by sports I find that Tarantino quote amusing, but it's definitely bullshit. I've seen with my own eyes people who are pathologically into watching it on TV.

 

I fully admit that I use sports as a way to give myself a sense of purpose in my life where at times I feel utterly bereft of one. Not everyone can (or should) be a heroic crusader, some of us have to be the sheep that they keep in line.

I really don't know how to describe this to you guys.

This is a very religious town. We don't sell out shows on Sunday morning. ESPECIALLY the very first show in our 2nd largest theater.

We've sold out every 2D show so far today. Both big houses and everything in between. Demand is so high now that our 3D show in the theater with NO A/C in June sold out.

If this pace keeps up, we will like hit another 6,000 people today, maybe even 7,000.

That is pretty much what I experienced this morning but it wasn't a sellout. Went from 1% tickets sold to 50% tickets sold entirely through walkups for a 10 AM show in a very religious Texas town. I got there and figured I would be one of only a few people in the theater and then the walkups just kept piling in during the trailers.

guys there is spillover already this sunday just watch the tweet this is just beyond insane... and i think the spillover for Monday will be historic we are witnessing history.

 

But even if this does not match TA record it s gonna blew away the weaek days of TA :D

Everyone who is thinking Sunday is going to drop as much as estimated are forgetting that for big movies....Sunday drops are generally overestimated. Let's look at the top 6 from Sunday estimates

Avengers

Estimated Sat - 69.7 Sun - 50.1.

Estimated drop - 28.1%

Actual drop - 18%

AoU

Estimated Sat - 57.2 Sun - 46

Estimated drop - 19.6%

Actual drop - 11%

DH2

Estimated Sat - 42.9 Sun - 33.6

Estimated drop - 21.7%

Actual drop - 15.7%

TDK

Estimated Sat - 48 Sun - 39.4

Estimated drop - 18%

Actual drop - 8.5%

Now IM3 and TDKR are the only two of the top 6 that didn't follow this pattern but also IM3 had bad WOM and TDKR had the shooting as extenuating circumstances. Even if we include these....4 out of 6 times the estimated drop for Sunday was GROSSLY over exaggerated!!

It will get separate press for breaking the record tomorrow. Variety and THR in particular plaster Facebook with articles about EVERYTHING.

The problem is the general movie going public doesn't give a rats ass about THR or Variety.
