I don't tend to think in these "what ifs" but it easily left 70-100m domestic and probably a couple hundred mil worldwide on the table for being as bad as it was. I remember that weekend--it was clearly aiming for a 70-80m weekend with Friday matinees, and word of mouth settled in really quickly. Under 3x with summer weekdays is legitimately terrible.

I actually hope that the performance of IO, causes Disney to cancel Cars 3. Other then to sell merchandising, and to push Lasseter's ego, it doesn't need to happen.

I want it made. I did not like Cars 2 but Cars 1 was great. Also, just to see everyone act all annoyed and angry about it will be fun to watch

Not going to happen. Shareholders have to be appeased.

Yeah, yeah, since Lasseter is charge of animation at Disney, it probably means that Cars 3 is a go, but I think they really have to improve upon the second one (which I actually enjoyed I'll be honest), or else Cars 3 could become Pixar's first underperformer at the box office.

Shareholders are also appeased when an original IP like Inside Out does phenomenally worldwide (far better than Cars) and creates a whole new line of merchandise.

I don't see why Cars 3 is even financially speaking in Pixar's best interests in comparison to Toy Story or Finding Nemo sequels. Disney can do what they want to keep the merchandising train going--TV shows, Planes sequels, etc etc. But both movies were box office disappointments for them, even if they broke even.
