Tuesday #s | Minions 8M, Ant-Man 7.8M, TW 4.2M, JW 1.7M Down goes Avengers! JW #3 WW!

This whole Minions V Inside Out thing is kind of boring now.  Both are making gobs of money.  IO will probably win the battle and Minions will win the world war.  Both are incredibly successful.

As for this article where Uni spent 600 million on marketing, I'm obviously not discounting the article or the source, but why would Uni do that?  Why would they spend that much on marketing?  Are they really expecting to make back that much more through merchandising?  Seems kind of silly to me.

Which article? The only one I have seen said Universal's PARTNERS spent close to $600m. I don't know why people on this board twisted that into something completely different, but that is how the Jurassic World crumbles I guess. :P

Can you explain what that means?  Partners?  Like McDonalds and such?

Yeah, all the other companies that have product tie-ins featuring Minions spent $594m or whatever. The article never said Universal itself spent the money and people twisted it to mean Universal spent some unbelievable number marketing the film.

Yup, merchandising partners like McDonalds worldwide and then different partners by country spent around 600M to advertise the Minions. They probably got deals like "McDonalds can use Minions toys with happy meals" or "Clothing company X can sell Minions branded t-shirts" and stuff like that. They basically paid for the ancillary ads. Universal only put up the normal TV and print ads and so on.

So people here are twisting the numbers completely.  Tie ins have nothing to do with Uni's marketing budget.

Fuckin forums.  :)

The person who wrote that Minions article is a moron.

At Baumer : but the article was a pathetic click bait with no ethics, it was deliberately vague so you wouldn't really know what the big number  it was giving was really about.

Hence the confusion for some people.

The anti-Minions crowd here is pretty vocal about this kind of thing, lol. I remember Man of Steel had over $500m in product tie-ins but I do not remember anyone here trying to claim as a result of those reports that WB spent $300m marketing the movie.

People misread the article is my guess.

The studio has decorated theaters with giant Minions, put yellow labels on half a billion Chiquita bananas and joined with more companies than ever, including Amazon.com Inc., General Mills Inc., McDonald’s Corp., studio parent Comcast Corp. and Snapchat Inc. Partners alone have delivered $593 million in ads and promotions, Universal said.

200M according to WB.

Admittedly, this is a pretty smart way of getting either marketing for free, or getting production budget balanced out.

SPECTRE has pretty much got a lot of its budget back just through tie-ins.

People are mistaken. It's an intriguing domestic battle between Minions and IO. No need to throw OS numbers we established that both films are mega hits. Minions losing the domestic battle wouldn't hinder its amazing status, don't know why people are so sensitive. Nothing wrong with rooting for a film in a showdown though

Anyway, we don't really know the financial shenanigans of tentpoles, must be pretty complex and very different from one movie to another.

Trades like to pretend they know things but they really don't.

LOL....yea but come on, people like you and others are ostensibly very vocal about the "toxic word of mouth" and so on.  So that's why people get testy from time to time.

Which Potter movie "lost" money according to WB? lmao

Probably all of them.  Apparently WB spent a billion dollars to make each film.

All of them, but financials only leaked for one of them.

Hell, David Prowse does not get any residuals for ROTJ because his contract said "net revenue" and according to Lucasfilm ROTJ hasn't made any profit yet.

Par for the course for Bond. Tomorrow Never Dies apparently made back ALL of its budget through tie-ins. Bond really pioneered product placement deals, didn't it?

PDC1987, while, your numbers are accurate, your not looking at the whole story and simply picking and choosing what numbers make your favorite look better.

The whole story behind the numbers is that yes, Minions was up 25 million after opening weekend and yes, now it's up over 28 million.

However, what you left out is that it was up almost 35 million as of last thursday and has lost almost 6 million in the last 5 days. It's averaging loosing over a million a day to Inside Out now. Does that guarantee that Inside Out finishes over Minions? I have no idea, but unless it's daily averages start tracking closer to Inside Out, I would have to think that would be difficult to overcome over the next 2 1/2 months.

Umm, I don't have a favorite. I couldn't give a flying fuck about either film.
