Which movies from 2013 will be well remembered in 10 years?

Recommended Posts

The poll for 2014 was rather popular so I'm making one for 2013 as well.

In 10 years, what do you think the most remembered movies from that year will be amongst the general population and movie buffs? Which ones will be seen by the younger generation as emblematic of 2013? Discuss!

Since 5 out of the 29 choices in the 2014 poll got zero votes, I have shortened the 2013 poll to what I feel are the top 25 contenders. Choose the "Other" option if you think something else will have a strong legacy.

Remember, you can choose as many as you want. This also isn't about how much you personally will remember the movies in this poll.

Edit: Poll closed as of 8/8, you can still post in this topic.

I voted Her because ScarJo got award traction and didn't have a second in front of the camera which is memorable on its own. Furthermore, I feel like we will all look back on Phoenix's work in the future as a sort of masterclass in acting. Maybe same for Rooney too!

American Hustle because... well, it was the first movie I ever saw that I really thought about the work that goes into make a movie. I will always remember it, and it is still one of my favorites from the decade. I think once people can separate DOR from AMPAS his work can be viewed in a more holistic and artistic way.

And Frozen. Duh.

Wolf of Wall Street I think will always be placed in the middle of Scorsese's work. It will be remembered as a film in the arsenal of the greatest film directors of his era, I suppose.

General population will remember: Frozen, Hobbit, Catching Fire, Gravity

Man of Steel will certainly be remembered by many movie buffs... in a not so memorable way ;)

Personally, as a movie fan, Captain Phillips will be a movie I will certainly keep in my mind and which is part of my collection already.

Among the general public, Frozen may be it. Despicable Me 2 could have a chance though, it depends on how the series goes from here. MOS, Thor 2, Catching Fire, IM3 and Hobbit 2 will probably be remembered within the context of their larger film franchises. 12 Years a Slave and Gravity could be remembered among movie buffs because they were the big Oscar winners of that year, while Pacific Rim may go on to be a cult classic (well, moreso than now) depending on how the sequel does.

That was actually on my original list of 29, but it was cut because animated sequels are usually never well remembered after their franchise ends (Toy Story 2 and 3 and Shrek 2 are the only exceptions that come to mind), while live action sequels can be if the franchise is successful enough.

Why do you think DM2 will be more remembered outside of its franchise's fans than say IM3 (which made more money) or Catching Fire (which was more critically acclaimed)?

What's considered better outside of the big 4 (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino) and The Departed?

Because while all three were event films, DM2 is a kids movie that's more self-contained than IM3 and CF. You're right in saying that animated sequels typically aren't well-remembered after the franchises end, but the DM franchise doesn't look to be ending any time soon. I'm sure a decade will still be recent enough for future teens to look back and remember seeing it when they were kids, considering how big it was. Comparatively IM3 and CF do skew older, so future adults looking back will probably remember them within the context of the larger MCU and HG franchises.

Is Casino considered one of his best? My top four are Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfella, and Mean Streets. The Last Temptation of Christ is a clear fifth for me with Casino, King of Comedy being 6 and 7. Personally I found Hugo, The Departed and The Aviator are all a little better than Wolf of Wall Street.

Frozen will be the most remember because aside from its mega success, Disney never lets almost any of their animated movies to be forgotten. There will be broadway musicals, tv shows and lunch boxes with Elsa until the end of the world comes.

Gravity will be remembered as a technological landmark.

Hunger Games CF will be remembered as the peak of a huge franchise.

Wolf of Wall Street i think will end up in the top tier of Scorsese's work when he retires, so I think it will not be forgotten.

Also Pacific Rim and This is the End could end up building a strong cult following, they already halfway there.

From the rest Thor2, American Hustle, WWZ, The Wolverine and Dallas Buyers Club are already headed straight into oblivion.

Gravity needs to be experienced on the big screen. Watching it on a small screen, it becomes easier to focus on little flaws and nitpicks because the huge immersive spectacle is reduced. (The same thing could happen to Interstellar, and that was already nitpicked to death IN theaters.)

It's not like Apollo 13, where it's held up on the small screen because of the excellent character drama at its core, or 2001, where the philosophical questions and the amazing mood still hold up. I'm worried that Gravity could risk becoming like How the West Was Won, a huge success in its time that failed to hold up after its theatrical run because the grandiose scale was so diminished (whether through cropping to fit a TV, or reducing the image to fit inside the TV frame at its full width), and the scale and size was the main sell in theaters. And even that movie had a huge cast of characters, this is a 90-minute movie with two characters with characterization a that can come off as flimsy.

WB should consider periodically re-releasing Gravity in IMAX for short engagements, or something. Maybe even just one-night-only screenings.

Closing the poll due to inactivity.

The results were:
20 votes: Frozen

13 votes: Gravity, Wolf of Wall Street

11 votes: Catching Fire

8 votes: 12 Years a Slave

7 votes: Man of Steel

6 votes: Her, Iron Man 3

4 votes: Pacific Rim, Thor 2

3 votes: American Hustle, Hobbit 2, Star Trek Into Darkness

2 votes: Fast & Furious 6, Now You See Me, Prisoners

1 vote: Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, This Is the End, We're the Millers, The Wolverine, World War Z

Despicable Me 2 had a write-in vote, and in hindsight I probably should have included it over the movies that got zero votes (Oblivion, Elysium, and The Great Gatsby).
