Studio moves forward with “Alvin and the Chipmunks” sequel, “Joy” and “The Revenant” despite glut of at least five major Dec. 25 rivals so far

This Christmas movie season is extremely crowded, even by the standards of the traditionally cramped holiday, with six wide rollouts and two high-profile limited releases scheduled.

20th Century Fox has scheduled openings for three movies: “Alvin and Chipmunks: Road Chip,” David O. Russell‘s “Joy” with Jennifer Lawrence will both open widely and “The Revenant,” directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, is a limited release.

Honestly, they can probably do-exist just fine. Minus Alvin, they're all slow burners anyway.

And even Alvin...it's not a one weekend and done...and expectations are probably set off the last, not the first two.

They all carter to different audiences :

Joy : this movie I am sure now, DOR made it just for me. The Miracle Mop Fucking Rocks.

The Revenant : Scruffy Beards, Real Snow & Porn Misery lovers.

Chipmunks : The Minions crowd.

Means (if my headachy brain didn't make a mistake)

~ -63.??% Walk

~ -72% War Room

~ -64.??% SOC

~ -73.??% MI5

~ - 57.??% Transp.

I think that's not unexpected after a Labour Day Monday, I expect additional 'falls' for Wednesday...

Many people thought HTTYD2 would do $300m but it ended up doing $177m, I think people are getting carrying away due to how great Illumination has done with DM and Minions. A $150-200m domestic gross would still be good for Pets since the budget will be $75m.

Let us also not forget that before summer 2016, the market will have already been saturated by a number of family films.

January

THE NUT JOB II

KUNG FU PANDA III

March

MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN

ZOOTOPIA

MONSTER TRUCKS

April

THE JUNGLE BOOK

But if families have THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS as one of their priority films, then it will do well. Marketing will play a big role here.

It's not that I don't think it'll do well, it will but I think $300m is unlikely especially with so many films that feature talking animals before it opens. Edited by Jonwo

That's what I am thinking as well. But if it does make 300 M then it will launch a new franchise for Universal. I think even 200 M would be enough.

Ugh, all those movies going up against TFA's 2nd weekend.  I don't like it.
