Ozymandias
"Despite very positive reviews, we're gonna turn this scifi thriller into a straightforward action piece by cutting out 20 minute chunk of character detail/development." Sounds like a similar situation to Kingdom of Heaven, and we all know how shitty the chopped up studio version of that movie was.
Sam
If they wanted to cut out an entire sideplot or scenes whose absence from the film would not render the rest of the movie senseless then it is totally alright. Again, the Cinema Paradiso analogy holds, where almost a half hour's worth of the film was cut out because it focused on a secondary plotline(the romance) and made THAT plotline the crux of the film instead of the primary plotline(the relationship between the protagonist and the projectionist). Majority of the people I know who have seen both versions of the film far prefer the edited version because it is more seamless and focused than the uncut version. Heck, the uncut version was a box office disappointment when it was first released, and then when they released the edited version in theaters, that was a huge hit.If the studio thought those 20 mins of Snowpiercer unnecessarily complicated the story and characters and/or dragged the film down, and/or took away from the main point of the film, then they are well within their rights to have those scenes removed for smoother and crisper storytelling. Don't know how accurate that "film should be understood by audiences in Iowa.. and Oklahoma" quote is. Seems splintered and slightly out of context to me. Could just be a classic case of online blogs making a mountain out of a molehill.I see your point, but I base my opinion on a member who already watched the movie, thus knowing how it is. Also, Weinstein has a history of cutting foreign movies to fit whatever he thinks is best for American audience. So I won't hold my breath on this one either. If it's a 2.5hr, 3hr long movie, then I can at least understand the need to trim it down. But Snowpiercer is of normal action thriller sci-fi length, I can't see what's so complicated/drag/unnecessary/whatever that needs a whopping 20min cut from the director's cut.One more thing is that I'm familiar with Director Bong and is a fan of his works. I have faith in him to deliver a good movie and more than competent enough to know what are necessary to put in his own movies.
The Stingray
I don't get it. What's the film about? The trailer doesn't really show much. In fact it looks quite awful imo. U smoking that shit again?! The movie looks absolutely awesome!
baumer
U smoking that shit again?! The movie looks absolutely awesome! What part? The part on the train where they fight? The part where Tilda Swinton looks like a hag on crack? This film looks awful.

baumer
I'm not saying it will be awful, but the trailer is pretty bad imo.

Ugh. No. Nononono. I would agree with that statement, if original producers cut movie down. But not only a distributor, when movie is made, complete and is screening and making money in few places on Earth. It's interfering with artistic vision, it's killing the art. I know, movies is bussiness, but art bussiness after all.

Dementeleus
Apparently Bong Joon Ho isn't happy with the cut-down American release: http://thedissolve.com/news/624-bong-joon-ho-privately-furious-about-the-american-/
Chewy
No one's happy about it. I'll probably wait until I can (hopefully!) watch the full cut on BRD
SpiderByte
There have been reviews of what I believe is the Weinstein cut, and it still got great reviews regardless. So that's a good thing.
Bob Violence
Can you link to some of those reviews?
sdeezy
I really wanted to see this in theatres. Now because of Weinstein and his low fucking opinion of the average americans intellect, i'm going to have to wait for this on Blu-Ray. what an assclown! chasmmi
As still potentially the only person so far to have seen this film, I just cannot see where 20 minutes of cuts can come from.
