THR has an article too, lists the records the other outlets wrote about too, and those

...

Other domestic records include biggest second weekend of all time ($149.2 million), biggest third weekend ($90.2 million), biggest Thursday preview gross ($57 million), biggest Christmas Day ($49.3 million), biggest New Year's Day ($34.4 million), highest location average for a wide debut ($59,982) and biggest opening week ($390.9 million).

....

Many box-office observers suggest the Star Wars reboot will ultimately gross $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion worldwide, passing up Cameron's Titanic ($2.19 billion) to become the No. 2 film of all time, not accounting for inflation. Already, it's at No. 4.

Only two films have earned $700 million or more in North America: Avatar and Force Awakens.

Thats a relatively soft drop for a Wednesday. So it should stay right around 6 for Thursday and I'm still expecting around a 50 million dollar weekend. This is obviously playing very well with families and when you have a strong family filmit pretty much blows up on the weekend.

This is something I mentioned during the holidays.  I think this movie will play like a family movie from here on out...which means...

LEGS.  Long, gorgeous, beautiful legs.

For a Star Wars fan born on January 6, this is a great birthday present!

Do I understand that right = today is your birthday?

If yes, congratulations!  :hiphiphoray:

So I think this is accurate, but feel free to correct any errors. The All-Time Domestic B.O. Champs (start year indicates year it overtook previous record-holder, NOT film's release date):

1915-1939: Birth of a Nation

1939-1966: Gone With The Wind

1966-1971: The Sound of Music

1971-1972: Gone With The Wind (earned enough in 1971 re-release to overtake “Sound of Music")

1972-1976: The Godfather

1976-1978: Jaws

1978-1983: Star Wars

1983-1997: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

1997-1998: Star Wars (re-released in 1997; overtook “Jurassic Park”)

1998-2010: Titanic

2010-2016: Avatar

2016-????: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

As noted elsewhere, SW:TFA is the first sequel to hold the title.
