So I think this is accurate, but feel free to correct any errors. The All-Time Domestic B.O. Champs (start year indicates year it overtook previous record-holder, NOT film's release date):

1915-1939: Birth of a Nation

1939-1966: Gone With The Wind

1966-1971: The Sound of Music

1971-1972: Gone With The Wind (earned enough in 1971 re-release to overtake “Sound of Music")

1972-1976: The Godfather

1976-1978: Jaws

1978-1983: Star Wars

1983-1993: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

1993-1997: Jurassic Park

1997-1998: Star Wars (re-released in 1997; overtook “Jurassic Park”)

1998-2010: Titanic

2010-2016: Avatar

2016-????: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

As noted elsewhere, SW:TFA is the first sequel to hold the title.

Cool list. One correction, though: E.T. was the record-holder until the SW re-release. It grossed 399m (prior to its own re-release), JURASSIC PARK only did 357m.

Do I understand that right = today is your birthday?

If yes, congratulations!  :hiphiphoray:

Well, yesterday, actually.  January 6.  The specific day it passed Avatar.

It's funny, because the whole reason I started tracking BO was to see TPM pass Titanic, a movie I despised as an eleven year old Star Wars fan boy.

A couple decades later, and I love both Titanic AND Avatar.  Yet this is still somehow satisfying.  The kid inside me is jumping around with joy.

That is the list I have seen as well. Kind of amazing we are only on our 11th after a century. The record really isn't broken that often.

Also note all were nommed for BP except Jurassic Park (Birth of a Nation doesn't count since Oscars weren't around). Keeping the hope alive JP remains the only exception.

Some of the folks (one person in particular) seem to continue to push this adjusted stuff because they seem hurt TFA is passing their favorite movie (Avatar/Titanic). Whether it adjust higher or not due to inflation isn't always the whole story though.. the piracy TFA faces in 2015/2016 is so much greater than any of those movies on the all time adjusted list faced. On top of that, there is far more competition from rivaling studios today vs. 30 t0 40 years ago when there just weren't as many releases. There are so many variables at play here that help solidify TFA as one of the best runs ever, and there are also so many factors at play that show stuff like Gone with the Wind, Dalmatians, Excorcist, Titanic were more impressive. The truth is, none of us will ever TRULY know which movie deserves the unanimous crown for best domestic run of all time. You can make a case for so many of the movies listed.

Just enjoy the fact that you get to witness a movie do what it's doing en route to shattering all these records. Enjoy that you got to see Avatar's magical WOM leading to ridiculous drop after drop. If you were around for Titanic, think back fondly on it's impressive run that lasted damn near a year and would just not let up. Pick any and just appreciate what they accomplished and stop trying to cherry pick why one movie's run isn't as valid as the next's. They are all impressive in their own way. Discuss if you must (it is very fun I admit), but stop the bitterness already.

No Tuesday numbers for Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.  It played Wednesday in the US as well, maybe we'll get something for both days today.

I am searching for that as well.

I can tell you it has actually earnerd $6.11m in SK, and acc to est. in the China Forum ~ $13.94m in China.

IMHO not bad for a TV episode (series gets watched a lot in China per internet)

Of course, in this era, what has propelled Force Awakens to this B.O. benchmark faster than Avatar is the immense supply of 3D and digital screens. Since 2010, digital screens — which enable exhibitors to program more showtimes at a moment’s notice to meet demand — have shot up 168% to 41,518. Of that amount, 39% or 16,146 are 3D digital. Rentrak’s PostTrak reports that 45% of all audiences watched Force Awakens in RealD3D, 42% in 2D, and 12% in Imax.

From DHD.

So 45% + 12% IMAX (really 13% given the gross estimates we got over the weekend, plus it 45/42/12 adds up to 99%).  On the OW we got a 3D split of 28% RealD, 7% PLF, and 12% IMAX.  If we assume 7% PLF has held up, that would mean 38% RealD, 7% PLF, 13% IMAX.  With those splits, TFA (~764M) has sold ~70.6M tickets, a record pace through 20/21 days (fastest to 70M before was TDK at 46/47 days).  It will pass TDK (73.5M) and Avatar (75.5M) this weekend as it climbs over 800M.

A wise distribution executive once said “good movies rise to the occasion,” and that’s what we’re witnessing here with Force Awakens. True, rising ticket prices are a part of this film’s success, with PostTrak reporting that 52% of all moviegoer spent over $13 or more on a ticket.
