filmlover
Putting Adams in Supporting would've been silly. This isn't an Alicia Vikander/Rooney Mara situation where the fraud was considered acceptable because "they're not famous enough."
Kalo
Watch Other People, I smell an Oscar snub coming for Molly Shannon, she's fantastic in it, as is Jesse Plemons.
Ezen Baklattan
This is shaping up to be the most boring category of the year at the moment. Davis, Harris, Williams, Kidman, and Spencer look like the set five, and Davis looks like a clear winner. Only surprise could be Gerwig sneaking in. I'm pretty sure that's Best Actor. There's nothing beyond Affleck/Garfield/Gosling/Mortensen/Washington that could break through (sorry @WrathOfHan, but a nuclear bomb dropping is more likely than Chris Pine sneaking in). Jake Gittes
Best Actor should at least give us an atypical winner in Affleck, this is basically just gonna be, "OK, Viola Davis has an Oscar now. Moving on..."
dxmatrixdt
Michelle Williams was really good but she was not even in Manchester by the Sea that much. Nicole Kidman was not in Lion that much and she was good, but I am not sure she will get in... I think it would be fair to put Viola Davis in the supporting actress category. I have seen all 3 of these movies so far. Not sure yet what to make of Hidden Figures. It seems the movie revolves around Octavia Spencer's character so i don't know why she would be here for supporting actress.. This shows who is eligible (I think) http://www.awardscircuit.com/oscar-predictions/oscar-predictions-best-supporting-actress/ Viola Davis – “Fences“ Michelle Williams – “Manchester by the Sea“ Naomie Harris – “Moonlight“ Nicole Kidman – “Lion“ Octavia Spencer – “Hidden Figures“ THE NEXT FIVE Greta Gerwig – “20th Century Women“ Janelle Monae – “Hidden Figures“ Helen Mirren – “Eye in the Sky“ Molly Shannon – “Other People“ Margo Martindale – “The Hollars“ OTHER TOP-TIER CONTENDERS Lupita Nyong’o – “Queen of Katwe“ Gugu Mbatha Raw – “Miss Sloane“ Rachel Weisz – “The Light Between Oceans“ Elle Fanning – “20th Century Women“ Greta Gerwig – “Jackie“ Margaret Bowman – “Hell or High Water“ Julianne Moore – “Maggie’s Plan“ Judy Davis – “The Dressmaker” Elle Fanning – “Live By Night“ Felicity Jones – “A Monster Calls“ ALSO IN CONTENTION Aja Naomi King – “The Birth of a Nation“ Leslie Mann – “The Comedian” Laura Dern – “The Founder” Kristen Stewart – “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk“ Hayley Squires – “I, Daniel Blake“ Chloë Sevingly – “Love & Friendship” Teresa Palmer – “Hacksaw Ridge“ Laura Linney – “Nocturnal Animals“ Sienna Miller – “Live By Night“ Lizzy Caplan – “Allied“ OTHER POSSIBILITIES Rooney Mara – “Lion“ Lily Gladstone – “Certain Women“ Laura Dern – “Certain Women“ Michelle Monaghan – “Patriots Day“ Sarah Gadon – “Indignation“ Rose Byrne – “The Meddler“ Elizabeth Olsen – “I Saw the Light“ Toni Collette – “Glassland” Shailene Woodley – “Snowden“ Keira Knightley – “Collateral Beauty” UNRANKED CONTENDERS IN PLAY Nina Arianda – “Florence Foster Jenkins“ Annette Bening – “Rules Don’t Apply” Haley Bennett – “The Girl on the Train“ Olivia Colman – “The Lobster“ Jennifer Connelly – “American Pastoral” Tyne Daly – “Hello My Name is Doris” Kim Dickie – “The Witch“ Dakota Fanning – “American Pastoral” Phoebe Fox – “Eye in the Sky“ Rebecca Ferguson – “The Girl on the Train“ Carla Gugino – “The Space Between Us” Kathryn Hahn – “Captain Fantastic“ Riley Keough – “American Honey” Helen Mirren – “Collateral Beauty” Gugu Mbatha-Raw – “The Whole Truth” Imogen Poots – “Green Room“ Kristen Stewart – “Certain Women“ Tilda Swinton – “Doctor Strange” Zoe Saldana – “Live By Night” Kyra Sedgwick – “The Edge of Seventeen” Rachel Weisz – “The Lobster“ Michelle Williams – “Certain Women“ Kate Winslet – “Collateral Beauty”

Because michelle williams has won so many recent awards naw i still think Viola got it. some performances get less critical traction but are the type of roles that do better w/ oscars. 4 example octavia spencer barely won any critics awards, i think they all went to jessica chastain that year, but when the tv awards like the globes and SAG came around octavia started sweeping. so we should know for sure if viola got it tonight w/ the globes.

Taking a quick look back at 2011 (not exhaustive, just looking at more major precursors: Spencer: Globes, BAFTA, BFCA, SAG, DC Film Critics Chastain: Chicago Critics (for Tree of Life), LA Critics (for 6 films combined), National Society of Film Critics (combined for Take Shelter, Tree of Life, The Help), New York Critics (combined for Take Shelter, Tree of Life, The Help), Online Film Critics Society (for Tree of Life), Satellite Awards (Tree of Life), Toronto Critics (for Take Shelter) Yeah, Chastain had a big presence in early precursors, but she got hamstrung because LA and NY basically gave her a cumulative award, which hurt going for any particular movie to push.
CoolioD1
whether you think she's lead or not i'm glad this became the viola davis category. if not for her it probably would be naomie harris vs. michelle williams and i just watched both movies the last couple days. overall as films they're exceptional but harris and williams are NOT GOOD. Capital A acting in two movies with very naturalistic ensembles. williams is fine until her "moment" that all the critics love. she looked like she was trying to make her self cry. even in viola's theatricality (which actually fits the tone of the picture she's in) she finds subtler notes than both of them. BirdMan
Viola Davis deserves the oscar for she was a beast in that role but also to be fair she did have a lot of space to do that compared to the others , she is practically lead actress nominated for supporting , like Vikander last year the academy needs some rules to prevent such cases
