MEH-MORIAL DAY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE | Abandon all hope, the box office is dead. 3 day weekend #s X-Men 65M, Alice 28.1M, Angry Birds 18.7M, Civil War 15.1M, Neighbors 9.1M. Bad openings, horrible holdovers.

Can't be worse than the original.

The original's pretty mediocre. The remake doesn't even look like it's following the original at all, so I'd say that's a fair point.

My top 15 from the summer game:

1) Captain America: Civil War: 550M
2) Finding Dory: 460M
3) Suicide Squad: 280M
4) The Secret Life of Pets: 270M
5) Jason Bourne: 250M
6) X-Men Apocalypse: 220M

7) Independence Day Resurgence: 180M
8) Star Trek Beyond: 170M
9) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows: 155M

10) Alice Through the Looking Glass: 140M

11) The Conjuring 2: 135M
12) Ice Age Collision Course: 130M
13) Central Intelligence: 125M
14) The BFG: 120M

15) The Angry Birds Movie: 115M

I shouldn't have put Alice back in, but at least pretty much everyone else is getting screwed on that. BFG is going to screw me too.

In retrospect, it is now pretty clear that Alice rode the 3D wave post Avatar WW. Same with HTTYD (which granted, had some amazing 3D effects and was actually a really good movie) and Clash of the titans which both fell with their sequels.

Yup, those 3 movies got lucky to be the main trio in the format after Avatar.

I kind of thought that was always clear. But, this just cements it. Agreed.

I think $280m is a bit high for a film called SUICIDE Squad.

It looks incredible. But...families.

I am getting a feeling that Central Intelligence could be a 22 Jump Street level hit.

I am expecting a 50M OW from that. Kevin Hart and The Rock alone can open movies to 20-30M as evidenced by The Wedding Ringer and Hercules. This is a two-hander and they both bring in their own fanbases, adding to that the movie is the first big comedy of summer as well.

oh god, why did i go so high on X-Men. I knew it was dropping.

And the BFG, lol. Damn you Spielberg

1) Captain America: Civil War 450
2) Finding Dory 375
3) Secret Life of Pets 305
4) Suicide Squad 300
5) X-Men Apocalypse 245
6) Independence Day: Roland's Reckoning 215
7) Jason Bourne 185
8) Star Trek Beyond 165
9) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 150
10) Ghostbusters 145

11) Central Intelligence 125
12) The BFG 125
13) Legend of Tarzan 115
14) Angry Birds 105
15) Warcraft 98

Not too bad of a predict. I'd bump Tarzan and Warcraft for Pete's Dragon and The Founder. Less competition in August, and I've got a feeling both will get decent WOM, going into Labor Day weekend. I also think Central Intelligence will be the breakout hit/comedy of Summer 2016 ($175 million+ DOM).

Didn't play Summer Game, but my top 15 would go like this (based on Memorial Day Weekend):

  1. Finding Dory: $445 million
  2. Captain America - Civil War: $420 million
  3. Suicide Squad: $315 million
  4. The Secret Lives of Pets: $275 million
  5. Central Intelligence: $225 million
  6. Independence Day - Resurgence: $215 million
  7. Star Trek Beyond: $190 million
  8. X-Men - Apocalypse: $185 million
  9. Jason Bourne: $165 million
  10. The Angry Birds Movie: $135 million
  11. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Out of the Shadows: $125 million
  12. Pete's Dragon: $115 million
  13. Ghostbusters: $110 million
  14. The BFG: $105 million
  15. The Conjuring 2: $100 million
