Kubo was okay. I enjoyed it more than Suicide Squad, Jason Bourne, Star Trek Beyond, and SLOP.

I did laugh at the spin being used for SS in the Deadline reporting, "17% ahead of GOTG's domestic run at this point!" Yeah that 40+ bigger OW is obscuring the weak legs to make that statement. Right now weekend estimates (as of noon Saturday) is 19-20 million for SS. If that holds, that'll be less on weekend #3 than what GOTG did ($25 million). Also worth noting for future reference, it did $17 million on weekend #4.

 

Interestingly Scott Mendelson on Facebook made the off-hand comment that he's not even sure SS will reach 300 million domestic.

 

Right now WB wishes SS had a China release.

Kubo absolutely bombed at my theatre. At 1.5M for the day so far and I'd be shocked if it made it past 2.

 

War Dogs is meh (actually it's pretty bad too just it looks good compared to Kubo). 3.2M so far but I think the late shows could push it to a bit past 4. Overall it was a terrible day for us; pretty much everything bombed except for Pete's Dragon which will do about 7M today for its second Friday.

Yeah, I think that studio is quite frustrated. Failure after failure might bring their domestic total near 2 billion and win a bunch of weekends, but there's still the bigger picture of failing so much. The sad part is that this year's domestic total might be the second highest in the studio's history if the studio keeps defying expectations. If only the GA had better literacy rates, they could actually read the press and stop spending so much money on these movies. At least for the other studios, the silver lining for them is the comforting mantra--"At least we're better off than WB". Just looking at Paramount's situation, can WB, the bigger failure, be too far behind? Heads will roll.
