The 2 hour runtime was the first red flag. Post NWH, every 2 hour long MCU has been weak critically (MoM, Thor 4, Quantumania, Marvels, now D&W). The 2 hour 30 minutes movies are better (NWH, BP2, Gotg3).

 

It seems the extra 30 minutes are only allowed if they are 100% sure they have a crowdpleaser on their hands. Runtime has been the most accurate predictor of reception.

PS : a little behind DP1 (4/5) but in line with DP2.

 

It's in line with Shang Chi and NWH , just behind GOTG 3 so a equivalent of A- cinemascore

Deadpool films shouldn't need to be much more than 2 hours (yes run times are only as good as it needs to be). They are comedies at their core at the end of the day.

People want this to revitalize the MCU and they needed a NWH reception here to make this a true course correction. With the current reception, it's more likely to be a a one-off hit rather than the start of a bigger trend.

To be fair that MC score was not a good sign at first, and the top critics still don't seem that thrilled by it. But these days fanservice is what's en vogue and it looks like the movie will satisfy that desire for most people and largely entertaining enough to make it go down smoothly.

 

Still, people are way too schizophrenic here.

Multiverse of Madness had a 74%. Weak by Marvel standards perhaps, but still a good score.

The point is, we are on a box office forum, and typically the only thing the general audience checks is that front page tomato and high percentage. Try to think of someone outside the internet who has ever said they were dissuaded from seeing a movie because of a Metacritic and a RT Top Critics score. What that says about the quality of the film itself is a different story. We'll know how the audience responds to it soon enough.

Right that's something I've thought about before.

RT is certainly the aggregator of choice, but newspaper critics do still have plenty of reach. May matter less for Deadpool as it plays to a younger and more fan-heavy audience.

Audiences will love the film. Every review I have read seems to be angry this this is a Deadpool sequel first and an MCU film second.

 

Genuinely, I read a review upset that you had to have knowledge of the last two Deadpool movies. One of the reviews considered that "homework."

Yeah I doubt that this makes a difference. People are buying tix for this because it's a Deadpool (& Wolverine) movie, not an "MCU revival" movie.

Deadpool 2 had some really harsh reviews too while the first one was universally acclaimed. The sequel holds up better, while the first one feels like the most mid 2010s movie ever.

This is the biggest problem with there being like 8 Marvel movies and shows a year. Like my mind has me thinking Shang-Chi came out like 8 years ago, because of all the media in between. It's Deadpool - it's never going to be everyone's cup of tea.   But so far these are solid reviews.  These aren't Venom or Morbius and even then bad reviews didn't hurt Venom b/c that's what that target audience wanted from a Venom movie.  If  D&W delivers what the Deadpool and Wolverine audience wants then it's done it's job.   If it doesn't it will crash like AMQ.
