Best Picture predictions-2017!

I sure hope not, looks like the worst movie ever. But he was awful in Hacksaw Ridge and they gave him a nom, and this is some baity shit. No way McAvoy or Renner gets in. I forgot about Patz, I could see it.

I'm rooting for Franco, Kayuula, Blige, and Mitchell. And Ronan/McDormand but they're already frontrunners anyway.

Garfield isn't happening for a film that literally nobody saw.

I need to share my disagreement with this.

Andrew Garfield brought Desmond T. Doss's family to tears playing the character. He did his research, and put his heart into the role. There are a myriad of scenes where the viewer can clearly see that Garfield is putting his heart into the role. In my opinion, he wholeheartedly deserved the Oscar nomination he received.

To be honest, would any other actor have truly been able to act in the role he did? I don't think so.

Does Garfield still have learning to do? Sure. Every actor does. But if Hacksaw Ridge is the kind of film he is building off of, then I am really excited for his future.

i dunno i never buy that argument. dead actors aren't getting nominated that often i think it's only happened like 3 times in 90 years.

True, but it's a really iconic character. I accept it's a crapshoot since we don't know how she is exactly, but i think it'll be a big role.

Then again, I realized I forgot Metcalf - she's probably in before Fisher.

Unless The Post really hits home with the Academy, I kind of think Three Billboards is going to take home the prize (although I'm torn between it and Get Out).  It's just too relevant to everything going on in Hollywood and politics.

Plus, Spotlight won two years ago, so there's already been a recent "power of the press" winner.

Oddly enough, I agree with nearly all of your predicts to a tee, and the ones I disagree with would be my alternates to get in.

Technically, I never said anything was a lock to win for Picture, I just wanted an excuse to use the Butler-moji.

I think we can now safely narrow the eventual BP winner down to 4 films : The Post, Three Billboards, Get Out, and Lady Bird (preferential ballot can be unpredictable).

The Shape of Water is probably not happening now, not convinced that Dunkirk is happening until I see WGA, Original Screenplay, acting and SAG ensemble nominations.

I still think Shape of Water is contending. People just haven't been talking about it because there hasn't been anything to talk about in between the festivals and now. It should pretty easily be the most nominated movie of the ceremony and I can still see GDT winning director.

The Shape of Water actually reminds me of Sweeney Todd 10 years ago. That film was expected to be a major contender after the reviews landed, but in the end only settled for three nominations (Actor and two techs). Burton and del Toro are in the same filmmaking boat too (directors who are often praised more for their production design than their storytelling). The Shape of Water should fare better (though I'm thinking Hawkins and Spencer will be the only acting noms - not feeling either Shannon or Jenkins anymore), especially in an expanded field, but it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being too odd to become a top contender.

My current Supporting Actress predictions:

1. Allison Janney

2. Laurie Metcalf

3. Lesley Manville

---------------

4. Michelle Pfeiffer

5. Julia Roberts

6. Octavia Spencer

7. Holly Hunter

----------------

8. Mary J. Blige

9. Hong Chau

10. Kristin Scott Thomas

Lesley Manville is the standout of Phantom Thread based on the preview reactions, and with how much buzz the movie is gaining, I have her in third right now. The last two spots are up from grabs with The Shape of Water and especially The Big Sick losing momentum. Michelle Peiffer is a hill I'm going to die on until nominations come out, but there's good reason to predict her. She's been very active on the campaign trail and has had a prolific fall between this and Orient Express. I still have Julia Roberts in, but Lionsgate isn't doing much to campaign right now; she'll likely have to rely on the movie's insane box office and SAG. As for the bottom tier, I already mentioned Blige's two drawbacks yesterday (subdued role and Netflix). Downsizing is more and more becoming a no1curr movie even for the studio, and the chances of a Darkest Hour coattail in either supporting category are looking slim.

I don't see Spencer happening either. It's a two-dimensional comic relief role and not much of a departure from what she's typecast as.

Idk, it may be wishful thinking, but with Kaluuya as an uneasy sell and the academy being prickly with Netflix, she may be the only shot to break the #OscarSoWhite curse.

I can see it miss on Original Screenplay (especially with the field so strong this year) but festival buzz has still been incredibly strong (reviews are definitely better than that of Sweeney Todd) and we still need to see how it does once it actually hits theatres.

I still think it could be the tech sweeper of the season.
