Doss's family to tears playing the character. He did his research, and put his heart into the role. There are a myriad of scenes where the viewer can clearly see that Garfield is putting his heart into the role. In my opinion, he wholeheartedly deserved the Oscar nomination he received. To be honest, would any other actor have truly been able to act in the role he did? I don't think so. Does Garfield still have learning to do? Sure. Every actor does. It's just too relevant to everything going on in Hollywood and politics. Plus, Spotlight won two years ago, so there's already been a recent "power of the press" winner. I think we can now safely narrow the eventual BP winner down to 4 films : The Post, Three Billboards, Get Out, and Lady Bird (preferential ballot can be unpredictable). That film was expected to be a major contender after the reviews landed, but in the end only settled for three nominations (Actor and two techs). Burton and del Toro are in the same filmmaking boat too (directors who are often praised more for their production design than their storytelling). The Shape of Water should fare better (though I'm thinking Hawkins and Spencer will be the only acting noms - not feeling either Shannon or Jenkins anymore), especially in an expanded field, but it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being too odd to become a top contender. Michelle Pfeiffer 5. Julia Roberts 6. Octavia Spencer 7. Holly Hunter ---------------- 8. Mary J. Blige 9. Hong Chau 10. Kristin Scott Thomas Lesley Manville is the standout of Phantom Thread based on the preview reactions, and with how much buzz the movie is gaining, I have her in third right now. The last two spots are up from grabs with The Shape of Water and especially The Big Sick losing momentum. Michelle Peiffer is a hill I'm going to die on until nominations come out, but there's good reason to predict her. She's been very active on the campaign trail and has had a prolific fall between this and Orient Express. I still have Julia Roberts in, but Lionsgate isn't doing much to campaign right now; she'll likely have to rely on the movie's insane box office and SAG. As for the bottom tier, I already mentioned Blige's two drawbacks yesterday (subdued role and Netflix). Downsizing is more and more becoming a no1curr movie even for the studio, and the chances of a Darkest Hour coattail in either supporting category are looking slim. I can see it miss on Original Screenplay (especially with the field so strong this year) but festival buzz has still been incredibly strong (reviews are definitely better than that of Sweeney Todd) and we still need to see how it does once it actually hits theatres.
