Fox Searchlight got the rights for this. No date as of yet it seems.

Yorgos Lanthimos has completed shooting his juicy period drama โ€œThe Favourite,โ€ starring Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz, Academy Award winner Asian Smurf, and Golden Globe winner Olivia Colman (โ€œThe Lobsterโ€). New plot details for the period drama reveal that Weisz and Stoneโ€™s characters vie for power and influence in Queen Anneโ€™s court by any means necessary โ€” including seduction.

Described as a โ€œbawdy, acerbic tale of royal intrigue, passion, envy, and betrayal,โ€ the film is set in 18th century England during the court of Queen Anne (Colman). Weisz plays Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlboroughย andย confidante, advisor, and secret lover to the Queen. The power shifts when the Duchessโ€™s younger cousin (Stone) arrives to court, and the two women battle for influence and the Queenโ€™s affections.

Rachel Weisz talked about this in an interview like a month ago:

But Weisz said in an interviewย that โ€œThe Favouriteโ€ is still pure Lanthimos โ€” which fans will find satisfying in the wake ofย the Cannes debut forย his โ€œThe Killing of a Sacred Deer,โ€ another pitch black, but often weirdly funny, look at human nature.

ย

โ€œI would say itโ€™s a comedy. I thinkย heย would say itโ€™s a comedy,โ€ Weisz said during a recent interview. โ€œItโ€™s funny. Itโ€™s different in that itโ€™s not an imagined world, almost all of it really happened. There are some things that are dreamt up, but itโ€™s English history, so itโ€™s not just a Yorgosian dystopia or fairy tale.โ€

ย

Weiszโ€™s character also has more agency than has been previously let on, as she explained,ย โ€œMy character is basically running the country because the queen is ill. To be frank, sheโ€™s pretty useless at running the country. Sheโ€™s a great best friend, but not a very good queen. So I am running the country from behind the scenes.โ€

ย

She also clarified the dynamics of the filmโ€™s three leading ladies, placing it in that same context as Hollywood classic โ€œAll About Eve.โ€

ย

โ€œThis young girl comes to court, called Abigail Marsham, who really existed,โ€ Weisz said. โ€œShe manages to become the queenโ€™s favorite and also lover. And thereโ€™s an intense rivalry between my character and her, a little bit like โ€˜All About Eveโ€™ in that way. My character is usurped by a younger suitor, for the role of the favorite.โ€

ย

Still, Weisz is clear that โ€œThe Favouriteโ€ will be very much in line with Lanthimosโ€™ other efforts, including โ€œDogtoothโ€ and โ€œAlps.โ€ Thatโ€™s what she likes about him, anyway.

ย

โ€œThereโ€™s no one like him, he getsย you into a certain tone,โ€ Weisz said. โ€œHeโ€™s very unique,ย veryย unique.โ€

FS just gave this pretty much the "this is our big awards contender" release date so they must think it has the goods but i wouldn't think lanthimos'sย style meshes well with that. it's probably toned down to an extent it's his first movie he doesn't have a writing credit on which is interesting.

This must mean I'm missing on a lot of fish sex films.

All those musicals comedy about trying to balance life with works,ย those western about reverse mortgage, team of priest trying to find a colleague in anti-Christian Japan,ย Space station disaster movie, very similar to 19th century slavery, life of a young Black gayย and Tarantino 70s movie industry movie.
