$525M would only put it slightly behind of Godzilla 2014 and it cost $25M more to make. Godzilla was considered only a minor success.

Kong might be twice bigger than Godzilla in China.Godzilla hit 77M.According to tracking in China thread,Kong may hit 150M.So 550M is possible

I am guessing Paramount and STX got cold feet, I imagine it'll still get a limited theatrical release.

I imagine studios want another Shutter Island or The Departed which were hugely successful rather than passion projects like Silence. Zemeckis might have issues too since The Walk and Allied both lost money, Spielberg will be fine as The Post and Ready Player One will be successful

I imagine Zemeckis will be able to get funding just fine. He probably needs to a bit more careful with the next script he chooses though.

Props to you @grey ghost for using The Arsenio Hall spit out juice scene from Coming to America. I'm going to tear you apart. And your friend too LOL. Classic scene.

I agree.

I doubt the credibility of any all time greatest comedy list that doesn't have Coming to America in the top 25.

Ths USD is much stronger now than it was in the summer of 2014.

Therefore, it will be a major success if Kong can match Godzilla's OS numbers.

Wow, Kong actually doing very well for itself. $150m+ domestic is on the table, as is $550m+ worldwide. The Monsterverse is back on.

Logan's drop is fine. Just means it won't do anything crazy like a 3x multiplier.

Also, I know I keep talking about Get Out, but I'm pretty sure this is a record third weekend for an R-rated horror movie. Only other horror I can think of (Sixth Sense, $24m weekend 3) is rated PG-13

I hope Godzilla 2 rectifies the errors of the first film and goes bonkers, I don't want a solo Kong movie beating a solo Godzilla movie.

WB, Universal, and FOX are all off to very good starts this year.

Since Rogue One three months ago, Disney has been MIA, they are really taking the all-the-marbles-in-one-basket thing to an extreme. If "Beauty" doesn't knock it totally out of the park, they have no margin for error, no small budget $90m DOM grossers to fall back on.

Beauty and the Beast has a budget of $160m. What kind of number are you predicting to make you think it might not be a success?

Kong made in its opening weekend what some expected Logan to do opening weekend....

Also congrats to Hidden Figures for passing 200M worldwide and La La Land for passing The King's Speech worldwide

Given the title and the purported trifecta of enemies I think they're making it an all out monster mash, i.e. more of a crowd pleaser. I loved Godzilla and thought many of the complaints were overblown, part of the internet-born backlash against it, but it still wasn't how *I* personally would make a Godzilla film. With that character in particular I want complete battles and destruction porn that would make Emmerich blush. As someone who loves both Godzilla and Hawaii I really wanted to see him literally pick up the famous Rainbow Tower at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu and throw it at the MUTO, as opposed to just seeing it crumbled post-battle like we did lol.
