Here's the part of "People were mixed over TLJ, therefore Solo is dooooooomed" argument I don't get:

 

TFA:  This is awesome, hurrah!!!

R1: This is really great, hurrah!!!

TLJ:  Yeah, I dunno about this one...

therefore:

Solo: Doom doom doommedy doom doom.

 

It's like the other two films never happened and we've gone straight from the prequels to TLJ to this. 

 

"But Batman v Superman lead to Justice League", I hear one cry.  

 

Okay.  But that had the same people in charge of both, with Zack Snyder leading the way before he had to step down due to outside reasons.  Last time I checked, none of the folks working on TLJ on any capacity are involved in Solo on a creative level (I'm obviously not talking about visual effects artists and things like that).

 

So why, exactly, would a film radically different in tone and style made by different people be received all that similarly to the one before it?

 

I get the argument that it had a troubled production (to say the least) and it might be bad because of that.  But I just cannot grok the argument that "TLJ got a mixed reception, therefore this will as well." It's like, one has very little to do with the other.

What you're failing to take into account is just how much the sizable faction that hates TLJ hates it. I dare you to find a movie from this decade with more passionate disdain. That's why there's people saying TLJ could have a big effect on how this opens at least. Not because they've churned out one misfire after the other with audiences ala DCEU. It's more of a Spider-Man 3 situation, where one movie is enough to have a huge effect.

Its rather Simple TLJ has caused a massive split in the SW fanbase and as a whole, the entire fanbase faith in the new direction of SW is less compared to when RO when around.

 

I would argue even if it opens big, the legs will be quite bad as well.

looked at Pulse and Solo is selling now.  I think it just went up so I took a minute to look at if it was IMAX or not and a lot of them were IMAX.  

from a few looks earlier, 

From a few reserved seating looks, Overboard seemed to have 60-80 purchases per showing.  That means it could be playing stronger than anything else that was playing in second place last week.

*moderate reviews and WOM for Overboard could make it hard for this to over perform, though.

Its actually doing pretty well presale wise near me. Burbank 16 first dolby showing is almost sold out. This is faster than deadpool.
