The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

According to Fandango, Detective Pikachu has sold one ticket for this Sunday (no it’s not mine). Should bode well for a great MDW drop:

I haven't been to many animated films in theaters since I saw The LEGO Movie. I can probably count the amount in a theater I've seen on one hand probably.

Most I see through babysitting.

I know right.

I mean, I can't really criticize them. I liked Shark Tale as a kid and I LOVED Chicken Little to death but re-watching them after a decade of not seeing them was an eye-opener as to realizing how much crap I loved as a kid.

If I remember the ones I've seen in theaters correctly:

LEGO Batman

Incredibles 2

Teen Titans GO! To the Movies

Spider-Verse

So, basically just superhero stuff crossing the streams pretty much :hahaha:

First count of today, only Thursdays-

Godzilla: KoTM-129 (+4), 8 screenings (3 IMAX, 3 3D, 2 Regular)

Aladdin-119, 7 screenings (2 IMAX, 2 3D, 2 Regular+Fan Screening) Final Week

Dark Phoenix-70 (+6), 6 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 3D, 2 Regular+Fan Screening)

Good for KoTM and Phoenix. Aladdin though.................

Final count of today, only Thursdays-

Godzilla: KoTM-130 (+5), 8 screenings (3 IMAX, 3 3D, 2 Regular)

Aladdin-143 (+24), 7 screenings (2 IMAX, 2 3D, 2 Regular+Fan Screening) Final Week

Dark Phoenix-70 (+6), 6 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 3D, 2 Regular+Fan Screening)

Remember when I said Aladdin had to improve greatly on my end for me to consider it doing good? Well it happened. I'll talk more in the comparison post but if this momentum keeps up, I'd say 60+ 3 day is safe. In total today Godzilla sold 5 tickets, Phoenix sold 6, and Aladdin sold a giant 24 tickets.

Dark Phoenix-41 (+10), 6 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 3D, 2 Regular+Fan Screening)

Phoenix starts off...decent. It outsold Aladdin but didn't outsell KoTM nor even come within ten tickets range of it. In general today seemed kind of slow honestly besides for Phoenix. Aladdin's continuing along decently which it needed to but Wick and KoTM slowed down a lot today for some reason. In total today Dark Phoenix sold 41 tickets, KoTM sold 2, Wick sold 6, and Aladdin sold 5.

In comparison to KoTM and Aladdin's first days-

Godzilla: KoTM-56

Dark Phoenix-41

Aladdin-26

John Wick-77 (+2), 4 screenings (2 IMAX, 2 Regular)

Pikachu had an insane increase today which it really needed, hopefully this is indicative of a wider trend. Also I might be speculating too much but...tbh I'm feeling worried for Aladdin. While it initially had good pre-sales this slow down is...somewhat troubling. There's showings with only one or two tickets sold still. But anyways in total today Aladdin sold one ticket, Detective Pikachu sold an insane 18 tickets, and John Wick sold 2 which is less then my earlier count of 6. I possibly miscounted earlier.

It's equal to Wick and Pikachu now but had bigger Mondays then both of them. We'll see how it goes but it's the first positive sign for Aladdin I've seen yet.

Only Thursdays

Orange Park AMC

Aladdin - 141 (0), 8 screenings (2 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 1 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Godzilla KOTM - 117 (+9), 7 screenings (2 IMAX, 1 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

Rocketman - 25 (0), 3 screenings (1 Dolby, 2 Regular

SLOP2 - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 89 (+3), 8 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

I counted twice but Aladdin literally sold 0 tickets today at the OP AMC. Yikes. Rocketman and SLOP2 also put up goose-eggs. Dark Phoenix has still slowed. KOTM had a great day with 9 tickets sold.

Regency AMC

Aladdin - 251 (+30), 8 screenings (2 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

Godzilla KOTM - 141 (+4), 10 screenings (3 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 3 Regular)

Rocketman - 19 (+1), 3 screenings (1 Dolby, 2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 5 (+1), 5 screenings (2 3D, 3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 115 (+7), 8 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Regency's Aladdin numbers keep going up by the bucketload. KOTM had a slower day and Dark Phoenix had a nice pick-me-up. SLOP2 and Rocketman both got 1 ticket.

Epic Theatres at Oakleaf

Aladdin - 59 (+4), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Godzilla KOTM - 16 (0), 3 screenings (3 Epic XL)

Rocketman - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 4 (0), 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Doesn't look like Oakleaf preorders too far out.

NewVision 12 at Fleming Island

Aladdin - 10 , 4 screenings (2 3D, 2 Regular)

Godzilla KOTM - 4 , 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Rocketman - 0 , 0 screenings

SLOP2 - 0 , 0 screenings

Dark Phoenix - 1 , 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Didn't realize the theater closest to me started doing seat reservations til today so I'll start keeping track of that theater too.

Only Thursdays

Orange Park AMC

Aladdin - 154 (+13), 12 screenings (+4 Regular) (2 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 1 3D, 6 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Godzilla KOTM - 126 (+9), 7 screenings (2 IMAX, 1 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

Rocketman - 27 (+2), 3 screenings (1 Dolby, 2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 95 (+6), 8 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Aladdin is back on the board. KOTM had a good day and so did Dark Phoenix. Rocketman is still at a crawl and SLOP2 is dead until further notice.

Regency AMC

Aladdin - 278 (+27), 8 screenings (2 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

Godzilla KOTM - 147 (+6), 10 screenings (3 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 3 Regular)

Rocketman - 19 (0), 3 screenings (1 Dolby, 2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 5 (0), 5 screenings (2 3D, 3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 119 (+4), 8 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Aladdin keeps getting those buckets while KOTM and Dark Phoenix get a few more tickets. SLOP2 and Rocketman... Zilch. Nada. Nothing.

Epic Theatres at Oakleaf

Aladdin - 74 (+15), 5 screenings (+2 Epic XL, +1 3D) (2 Epic XL, 1 3D, 2 Regular)

Godzilla KOTM - 16 (0), 3 screenings (3 Epic XL)

Rocketman - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 4 (0), 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Other than Aladdin adding a few screens and tickets, nothing to see here.

NewVision 12 at Fleming Island

Aladdin - 21 (+11) , 4 screenings (2 3D, 2 Regular)

Godzilla KOTM - 4 (0) , 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Rocketman - 0 (0), 0 screenings

SLOP2 - 0 (0), 0 screenings

Dark Phoenix - 1 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Aladdin did more than double its total today. Lol. Otherwise nothing.

Total Seats Added Today:              1222

Total Seats Sold Today:                   173

The best comp I have so far is Detective Pikachu.  I also have less ideal comps with Solo (for Memorial Day Weekend like-for-like), JW2 and FB2.  Use the later comps with caution.

Unadjusted Comps

1.0963x as many tickets sold as Detective Pikachu 3 days before release.

PRE-SALES NOTE:  [Pika Pika had 29 days of pre-sales while Aladdin had 24]

T-3:

Pika:     238  tickets sold  [0 sellouts/71 showings   |  6647/8132 seats left   | 18.26% sold]

Adjusted Comps

.3477x as many tickets sold as Solo 3 days before release.

.5162x as many tickets sold as Fallen Kingdom 3 days before release.

.5237x as many tickets sold as Crimes of Grindelwald 3 days before release.

PRE-SALES NOTE: Solo had 20 days of pre-sales, JW2 had 22 days of pre-sales and FB2 had 30 days of pre-sales while Aladdin had 24.

ADJUSTMENT NOTE: If a theater locally that is now selling tickets for reserved seating was selling them for the above movies, but as non-reserved seating for that movie, it is not counted toward the ratio of 'as many tickets sold' for the movie in question.  If a theater is brand new to the region and wasn't yet open for one of the above movies, however, it will be counted toward the ratio.  It will also be counted toward the ratio if it was playing in a different number of theaters locally.

T-3 days:

Solo              196 tickets sold [0 sellouts/103 showings |   6745/11010 seats left | 38.74% sold]

JW2               443 tickets sold [0 sellouts/118 showings |   9224/12097 seats left | 23.75% sold]

FB2               203 tickets sold [0 sellouts/102 showings | 10987/13876 seats left | 20.82% sold]

Aladdin (FB)  169 tickets sold [0 sellouts/93 showings   | 10192/11705 seats left | 12.93% sold]

Aladdin (JW) is the number of tickets sold at the same theaters I had tracking info for Fallen Kingdom and Solo

**Aladdin (FB) is the number of tickets sold at the same theaters I had tracking info for Crimes of Grindelwald

IMO, the best comp of movies I have tracked will be Fallen Kingdom.  I also have comps with the Aladdin (still in pre-sales) and Detective Pikachu as something as a compare/contrast with current May movies.  They may not be as good comps, being in different genres.

Unadjusted Comps

1.2307x as many tickets sold as Detective Pikachu 10 days before release.

0.8582x as many tickets sold as Aladdin 10 days before release.

PRE-SALES NOTE:  [Pika Pika had 29 days of pre-sales and Aladdin had 24 while King of the Monsters had 20 days of pre-sales]

Aladdin   44 tickets sold  [0 sellouts/68 showings   |  9052/9997 seats left   |  9.45% sold]

Adjusted Comps

.4544x as many tickets sold as Fallen Kingdom 10 days before release.

PRE-SALES NOTE: JW2 had 22 days of pre-sales while KotM had 20.  Also some theaters had KotM tickets on sale for a few days before they were officially announced to the public for sale.

KotM (JW)      47 tickets sold [0 sellouts/90 showings   | 10317/11074 seats left   |    6.84% sold]

I feel like there must be a Conservation of Optimism between myself and @Mulder because, not gonna lie, not a great sign out of Sacramento today for Aladdin

Now there is one major proviso. Only two theaters that had reserved seating expanded today and those were very late in the day.  More than a few theaters that are going to expand have yet to do so.  So the kickstart of sales that happens from brand new showings didn't happen.

Still.  Can't really say this was anything other than disappointing for Thr sales.  We'll see how it is tomorrow with a full day of sales at the expanded places, plus whatever gets added tomorrow.  But, just "not great Bob" locally.

We'll see how it goes tomorrow, I suppose.

Aladdin - Rocketman - Godzilla - Dark Phoenix - Pet 2

Thursday Previews

Lincoln Square 13
  5.8 5.10 5.13 5.15 5.17 5.20 Total % + Sold
Aladdin 388 412 481 543 545 627 1554 40.35% 82
Rocketman 122 133 150 160 182 197 594 33.16% 15
Godzilla -- 434 567 618 646 695 2122 32.75% 49
Dark Phoenix -- -- 479 612 694 741 1554 47.68% 47
Pets 2 -- -- -- -- 9 9 297 3.03% 0

  • The Monday before their release Pika Pika sat at 465 / 32% of Available Sold, and John Wick 3 sat at 486 / 30.64% of Available sold.  Neither had IMAX screens.  Of the 627 sold for Aladdin, 365 are for the IMAX screen.  It's more subjective to compare, but it feels like Aladdin's evening out for Lincoln Square.  The only one comp I have (Lincoln Square with IMAX showings) is AEG, but that I believe that's terrible comp, hence I'm not digging it up.

  • Rocketman has stalled out.  Hopefully, it can pick up steam this week.

  • Dark Phoenix's ahead of the pack thanks to its Fan Event IMAX, which is 90.41% Sold Out.

Southern Maine Cinemagic
  5.8 5.10 5.13 5.15 5.17 5.20 Total % + Sold
Aladdin 6 6 11 16 22 36 1336 2.69% 14
Rocketman 4 4 4 4 4 4 1160 0.34% 0
Godzilla 15 22 26 34 1316 2.59% 8
Dark Phoenix 0 2 2 3 962 0.31% 1

  • All right, so, interesting.  Aladdin and Godzilla, just like Lincoln Square, are running neck and neck.  Aladdin also sold about double the amount of tickets compared to Godzilla, just like LS13.  Even though LS13 is selling way more tickets, I like that the patterns hold up.  Onto:

  • Aladdin still looks cray anemic at my local theater chain.  I investigated more.  The 6:30PM IMAX showings for Friday has 25 tickets sold, Saturday has 8 tickets told.  The rest of the showings at the IMAX theater have light to nonexistent sales.  The recliner theater -- which is the most pre-sale heavy of the 3 theaters in the chain -- has 6 tickets sold for BOTH the 6:40PMs on Friday and Saturday.

Maybe we're looking at this wrong.  Aladdin's not selling poorly -- @CoolEric258's data shows the comps coming out to a respectable OW -- it's just not Thursday Night Preview heavy.

  • I'm still LMFAO at Dark Phoenix.  I guess our IMAX isn't good enough for the Fans.  (TBH, I have trekked to NYC for LS13's screen, so I get it.)

  • I'm not tracking Pets 2 at this Chain until it sells a ticket, or until the week before its release.  And with Ma, I will do a final count on that Thursday.  Save me some counting.

Well, the daily tracker should now be live for Aladdin:

Aladdin 2019-05-23	THU	7350	---
Aladdin 2019-05-24	FRI	10920	---

Aladdin 2019-05-27	MDY	1334	---

Looks like Sat has a pretty decent spread already. Haven't really interpreted these all that much before though. so I can't comment on it that intelligently.

There was a wide variety of movies I pooled from (the full list was like 25 or something) but I tried to cut it down to just Disney movies and recent family releases (though I might cut out a couple of the larger comps). I also added Fantastic Beasts, for fantasy comparisons. Solo's here for Memorial Day comparisons, but I don't think we should take that comp too seriously. Generally speaking, the stuff between Incredibles and Ant-Man seem to be the most fitting comps. Incredibles, Spider-Verse, Shazam, Pikachu and Ant-Man are all family (or family-skewing) films that also pulled in a decent amount of non-family audiences. And in that case, if 85M-115M is what we'd get for the 3-Day, then that's great. If that's the 4-Day, that's...okay? Could be better, but could be worse.

@Porthos I also looked into the archives and found Solo's "last 7 days". I don't have the time to translate things, but Aladdin saw a pretty solid spike in percentages when it comes to just the Monday compared to the 7 days section. Don't know what that means, but I guess that means it had a better jump compared to Solo? I dunno. My brain's fried at the moment. Only thing keeping me up is Daft Punk as background noise.

43% of The Predator (10.5M)

84% of Hereditary (11.4M)

36% of The Meg (16.3M)

62% of La Llorona (16.3M)

185% of Overlord (18.9M)

344% of The Prodigy (20.1M)

144% of Truth or Dare (26.9M)

That's...alright actually. Maybe Gunn fans are inflating ticket sales, and I doubt it will hit even the high teens, but this seems pretty decent for a cheap horror movie.

Booksmart

Monday

54% of Happytime Murders (5.2M)

43% of The Hustle (5.6M)

37% of A Simple Favor (5.9M)

41% of Blockers (8.5M)

66% of Tag (9.9M)

89% of Spy Who Dumped Me (10.7M)

Goddammit Annapurna!

Now I didn't say it was entirely out of the clear, just that it no longer lagging behind two 50 million openers was a good sign especially if it kept doing Monday numbers. Keyword is if though.
