The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Next week is looking to be when everything sees their theater counts slashed. Theaters around me are starting their schedules for Christmas Day and American Underdog/A Journal for Jordan/Licorice Pizza are all being placed in smaller auditoriums (all the big to medium-sized auditoriums are going to Spider-Man/Matrix/Sing/King's Man/West Side Story, unsurprising since those are are almost certain to be the daily top 5 throughout the holidays).

I know up here even with as many showings/seats, there are still a number of theatres who haven't even booked the IMAX screens, mostly AVX and regular-so those will no doubt kick in probably tomorrow for weekend showings.

Which people?

There are some people who think this movie will be very presale/Thursday night heavy and that it will have very low walkups. I don't think this will be the case. I know we are in a pandemic and that movies are now way more presale and Thursday night heavy, but I don't think it will be as frontloaded as a Star Wars movie.

With the pandemic and tons of people skipping opening weekend due to crowds (aka me) I disagree.

Ramming into tight squeeze spaces with no one wearing a mask? Nah I'll wait till it's quieter.

Nice jump, but it has fallen behind TRoS' gains. Let's see if reactions and reviews can push NWH back ahead, which I do expect it to FTR.

Before I started counting, I was thinking it'd be quite impressive if it added 1K today. Destroyed that.

There was the Atom deal today, but then it sold 400 tickets in Regal which doesn't have Atom, so...really good.

Even with the pandemic, the MCU movie with the worst walkups and Thursday-weekend multiplier (Black Widow, which was probably only weak because all the hardcore fans went to see it Thursday night, while a lot of casuals probably just stayed at home and watched it on Disney+) still had more walkups and a bigger multiplier than Solo (which is the Star Wars movie with the biggest Thursday-weekend multiplier with 5.99, while Black Widow's was around 6-6.1). Even Endgame's multiplier was barely below Solo's at around 5.95.

Best thing it has going for it is the insane reviews. That could drive walk-ups for sure. Regardless if it's heavy for opening weekend, the next 7 days will be monstrous. 600+ domestic, hoping for 700 but that's asking a lot

Theater count is irrelevant. Show count is more important. NWH has more shows than SW9 for sure. Way more considering its a 3PM start.

I’m aware. I was interested in how closures may have affected theater count during the winter months. It’s not as much as I expected based on the way some in here talk.

These comps just seem weird in general. Only 1.54x Eternals at this point for Thursday?
