The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

It's opening at quite a few theaters around me. Not that I expect it to do particularly well.

I'm surprised the local chain is even getting it because of how poorly horror and younger skewing films do there; Insidious and Maze Runner got dropped once the two week contract ended a few weeks ago.

Focus paid a nice penny for it at Sundance more than a year ago (most likely because of the fact it's Yelchin's final movie and didn't realize the movie was a hard sell), so they might as well try and milk it as much as they can.

Thanks. I had no clue this was even coming out next week; Focus is doing an awesome job marketing it!

It's going to make peanuts for sure. I'm guessing Focus had no clue how to sell it; too young-skewing and weird for specialty crowds and the R rating makes it not very teen-friendly.

They probably could have dumped a million or two into YouTube advertising.

Final sales tonight at my theater:

Red Sparrow: 35/78

Death Wish: 25/78

Red Sparrow comps:

45% of Kingsman (17.6M)

50% of Orient Express (14.4M)

95% of The Post (18.4M)

105% of Game Night (17.9M)

125% of Annihilation (13.9M)

135% of The Commuter (18.5M)

Atomic Blonde was in the low-teens IIRC, so that's not a good comp. 17-19M is looking like the range from previews; we'll see what the Friday comps have in store.

Death Wish:

30% of Kingsman (11.7M)

80% of 12 Strong (12.6M)

90% of Den of Thieves (13.7M)

90% of Hostiles (9.1M)

95% of The Commuter (13M)

That 20M tracking seems incredible optimistic given my area is basically the "target demo" (old white guys).

OK, I have a problem.  I'm not going to be able to get on the road in time to make my 7 pm IMAX showing for Red Sparrow, so my friend and I are rescheduling.  My question is, if I just leave it as is and don't get a refund, will Red Sparrow still get credit for my ticket even if I don't show up?  Because if so, I'll let it lie.

How tomorrow looks at my theater:

Spoiler

Black Panther:

10:00: 2/124

10:30: 2/63

11:00: 7/113

11:30 3D: 2/78

10:30: 4/78

Game Night:

Jumanji and Every Day have sold nothing.

Red Sparrow comps:

60% of The Post (11.6M)

70% of Orient Express (20.1M)

95% of Kingsman (37.1M)

150% of The Commuter (20.6M)

165% of Atomic Blonde (30.2M)

It's hard to find a perfect comp for this given it'll likely skew towards females.

Death Wish:

50% of The Post (9.7M)

65% of American Assassin (9.6M) (day of)

70% of 15:17 to Paris (8.8M)

80% of Kingsman (31.2M)

100% of 12 Strong (15.8M)

105% of Hostiles (10.6M)

120% of The Commuter (16.4M)

Over half of sales so far are for the very first show; compare that to RS, and you can see how older skewing this will be. Critics are calling it NRA propaganda, so this is going to bomb in metro areas.

I'm reading several people say their movie pass was blocked for 2d showings of Red Sparrow tonight and people didn't find out until the theater and went to see other things. I hope that doesn't stay true, after opening night.

No one ever answered you, but for future reference, yes it still counts as money going into Red Sparrow's column if you don't get a refund.
