I agree with you about Pirates 5.  Depp is poison right now.  No one cares for him.  And the third and fourth film were not well received at all.  I can't predict what it will do internationally, but under 200 here seems logical.

But what about quality poison? Does he makes movies...that he happens to be in....automatically suck, reception-wise?

It is definitely possible. But I also wonder, how much does Mother's Day really help comic book films like Guardians? Of other Marvel films that also had Mother's Day fall on the second weekend:

Ultron dropped 33% on Mother's Day Sunday and then dropped 32.4% on the following Sunday.

Iron Man 3 dropped 35.2% on Mother's Day Sunday and then dropped 29.8% on the following Sunday.

Spider-Man 3 dropped 37.1% on Mother's Day Sunday and then dropped 30.0% on the following Sunday.

Do we really have much evidence to suggest that Mother's Day significantly softens these kinds of films Sunday drops, given they all dropped similarly (or better) the Sunday after?

Guardians dropped 23.7% and 25.1% its past two Sundays, so I wonder just how much of a stretch a 25.4% drop this Sunday really is? I'm just thinking out loud. I think you could be right, but I'm just not certain. It seems like a normal Sunday drop for Guardians at this point. I could see the actual Sunday drop being similar, if somewhat worse than estimated.

Peace,

Mike

Well, I guess we'll find out tomorrow. :)

I don't know if it's just me but I think this Summer in general might have a middling/mediocre box-office. The only thing I think might surprised is maybe Wonder Woman?

I'm kinda curious what the breakdown of the  audience was for Everything Everything.

Yep. The trades have posted from analysts that this summer will be down something like 400m from last year, close to $4b, which is on par with the dreadful summer 2014 (tho that summer was partly down because fast 7 was pushed back very suddenly just 6 months out and there were no other tentpoles ready, and partly because it was missing a pixar movie).

I have a gut feeling that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 maybe the big hit of May. But I also feel that Memorial Day can bring in some solid debuts with Baywatch and Pirates 5. But June 2017 seems to be more of the interesting points of this summer.

This summer is very reminiscent of 2014. No big all consuming juggernaut but a lot of wealth being spread among movies. In many ways that is better than a 2015 or 2016 which was feast or famine.

I don't think most people care about the Depp scandal anymore to be honest. I guess he had enough name value to survive it.

It depends on reviews.

Plus too people kinda thought Amber Heard was full of shit.

He was barely in Into the Woods but he was very present in the marketing materials so it is a mixed bag. Black Mass did ok. Everything else is either a shitty indie or a MEGA BOMB.

I liked Black Mass as a movie, but it's Box Office was killed by making it look like Johnny Depp was playing yet another one of his silly characters in makeup. And I thought Transcendence and Dark Shadows both sucked.

So after the third weekend in May, you suddenly have a gut feeling that a film which has grossed 300 million and on it's way to at least 360 million, is going to be the big hit of May?

Way to go out on a limb there.  :P

Honestly, I know this summer might not make a lot of money as compared to other summers but I'm really excited for it. Im excited to see the mid-budget films have good runs and show Hollywood that you don't have to green light blockbuster after blockbuster in order to have a summer hit on your hands. Last summer definitely gave us a taste of that but I think those films may have been overlooked because of the tent poles that came out. This summer there aren't as many tent poles and I'm really hoping the GA responds to the original mid-budget film (assuming they're good). Here's to films like Rough Night, Baby Driver, Atomic Blonde, Hitman's Bodyguard, Detroit etc having good leggy runs :)

Transcendence was one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen.

What I mean is that there will be only one hit from this month, which Snatched will break-even. Alien has overseas. Pirates and Baywatch can do well but ok numbers after seeing how things have performed so far.

And most of those films (except for Into the Woods) did from barely to not making their money back.

Especially the poorly received ones like Alice 2, Transcendence, Mortdecai & The Lone Ranger.

Clearly they underperformed/flopped for another reason as well.

WOM doesn't kick in until a few days after the OW. It has little effect on the OW. Besides that, the OD was already very unspectacular, proving that the Alien hook wasn't enough. Also, a lot people would disagree with you that A:C plays like a Prometheus sequel.

I wasn't talking about the internal multiplier, I was just commenting I don't expect a good WoM or multiplier.

And if you watch Covenant, it is definitely a Prometheus sequel that also forces a few throwbacks to Alien.  I was mentioning how the audience score being so low is likely due to people expecting an Alien movie and getting another Prometheus.
