$98m could give it the 5th biggest superhero origin opening ever.

And that would be an outright triumph for WB and the DCEU. I am still puzzled as to why so many on this forum expected WW to break out a la Deadpool or perform like more popular and/or established superhero titles such as MoS, Batman, Iron Man & Spiderman - let alone the team-up movies -

Wonder Woman seems likely to open in the range of the original Iron Man (which came out almost a decade ago) Cap 2, the original GOTG and at least $10M ahead of Logan.

In my view, this should be considered as perfectly successful since Wonder Woman (as iconic as she may be) has: a) never enjoyed the universal recognition of superheroes such as Batman, Superman and Spider-Man. 2) This movie doesn't in any way push the boundaries in terms of special effects, action set-pieces and spectacle in general, to be frank, the set-pieces in this one seem absolutely generic. Movies like the first Spider-Man, Iron Man or The Avengers did in fact push the limits of special effects and set-pieces for the time of their respective releases. People tend to forget the extreme importance that spectacle plays in determining the success for these types of movies. c) Wonder Woman also takes no real risks and has little novelty factor. Whereas films such as GOTG, Deadpool and Logan genuinely attempted and delivered on something quite different for the SH-genre, this one is quite conservative (not implying that it's not a good film, just noting that it's not original in any significant way) other than the "female-lead-angle"

My initial predictions for Wonder Woman compared it to Doctor Strange. The astonishingly positive critical reaction (which I should have expected) will push this one a bit further than that.

A 2.5-2.6 multi would be totally disappointing after this WOM. It's not like The Mummy will be much competition.

It's typical for the first film superhero movies though. Doctor Strange's multi was around 2.8, and considering WW opening bigger then that, around a 2.6 multi is where I'm expecting it to head.

Good number. Now people championing that awful 80m OW can finally shut up!

$80m wouldn't have been awful. In fact it would have been in the top 10 openings for a superhero origin story. And top 30 for any superhero film including all the team ups and sequels.

For an origin movie with WOM this good in a season this barren I'd definitely say a 2.5 multi is mediocre. But we're just arguing opinions at this point. WB have already scored a significant hit.

God I love Avengers 1. Especially that end sequence.

The "one tracking shot" moment will always be one of my favourite ever shots.

Avengers, Batman Returns and now Wonder Woman are my top 3 superhero movies.

In what sense?

Before Avengers, we ve never seen superhero action on that scale with such complexity.

Plus, I doubt the Average Joe & Jane (myself included anyway) knew that any of the actors set a foot in New -York , which was a pure CGI creation.

I liked TA's destruction porn sequence more than most finales of that ilk, but the ground shots never felt like NYC for a second. There's something about the city's streets that's just impossible to replicate if you're not actually there.

For superhero movies, my list goes

1. Dark Knight

2. Wonder Woman

3. Guardians of the Galaxy/Dr. Strange (tie)

4. X-Men: Days of Future Past

5. Avengers

I need to rewatch the Raimi Spidermen.

Superhero maybe not, but Transformers was years before, and its set pieces were at least on par.

@Last Man Standing

That's the scene I had in mind as well (the one with Iron Man) There's also lots of great scenes with the Hulk or Thor in that final battle scene.

That thing became generic and "same-y" once everyone started copying The Aveners blueprint, including their own sequel.
