Yep! Once Wonder Woman hits ~$365 million it will be the leggiest live action comic book film of the 21st century, beating out Guardians of the Galaxy's 3.53 multiplier from 2014, which itself beat Spider-Man's 3.52 multiplier from 12 years earlier in 2002. Once Wonder Woman hits ~$369 million, it will be the leggiest $40+ million opening comic book film since Batman in 1989. (This is among Friday openers only, obviously -- those few dratted weekday openers aren't comparable, unfortunately.)

If Wonder Woman can hit $391 million (or higher) for its total domestic gross, it will have the 6th best multiplier of ANY film that opened to $70+ million (Friday openers only):

Best Multipliers Ever for $70+ Million Opening Films:

  1. Avatar (2009) — 77.0 million (9.73)
  2. Finding Nemo (2003) — 70.3 million (4.84)
  3. Zootopia (2016) — 75.1 million (4.55)
  4. Inside Out (2015) — 90.4 million (3.94)
  5. American Sniper (2015) — 89.3 million (3.92)
  6. Wonder Woman (2017) — 103.3 million (3.79+) — IF IT CAN HIT $391M
  7. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) — 248.0 million (3.78)
  8. Toy Story 3 (2010) — 110.3 million (3.76)
  9. The Incredibles (2004) — 70.5 million (3.71)
  10. Finding Dory (2016) — 135.1 million (3.60)

Wonder Woman will have achieved this off a $100+ million opening weekend in the summer. Phenomenal stuff. Even if it falls short, it will still be in the top 10.

As can be seen, the list is dominated by animated films. Of the films with better multipliers than Wonder Woman (presuming it can hit $391M), three are animated films, one is Avatar (at #1 with its incredible juggernaut of a performance), and the other is American Sniper with its patriotic dominance.

Peace,

Mike

In fact, if it hits $391M, it will be the leggiest $100M+ OW movie of all-time (Friday openers only), edging out The Force Awakens

I've just noticed that the Top three movies DOM this year could be:

1-The Last Jedi

2- Beauty and The Beast

3- Wonder Woman.

Three female led movies. That's a first I think. And it's pretty cool :)

Another movie with an incredible run going back to the really old days was Home Alone.

12 straight weeks at #1 and half a year in the top 10. Even managed to sneak back into the Top 10 for a couple of weeks went it went to the 2nd run theaters.

Very different era, but still, very impressive.

Can it stick around after July 21st? I think that's the real test.

I don't think that is any test at all. It has passed all tests.

Not completely sure about this and haven't looked this up on BOM but I read that Home Alone is the only movie to be Number 1 over both Thanksgiving and Christmas weekend. Sounds true enough, but I'm guessing there might be other examples as well.

How long can Wonder Woman stay in the top 10?

Can it stick around after July 21st? I think that's the real test.

I didn't expect it to still be in the Movietickets top 5 or on Fandango Pulse 5 weeks after release. July 21st might give it a double feature boost - the WB World War movies double feature with Dunkirk. We might have 5 movies over 20M that weekend.

The hold this weekend will tell us whether 400M is alive or dead.

We gotta also look at the 3D factor and theater counts which Titantic didn't have compared to TFA as well which could widen that gap alot further.

Let's also not forget Titanic's running time.

The longer running time also meant theaters had less showings per day.

The re-release in 2012 also really showed me how you really had to plan your day around and making it a priority to see the movie.

Its a testament to how HUGE Titanic's release was. Nothing like it since has even come close.

POTC5 should add ~0.7m on Wed and Thu combined for 167.6m cume.

55% drop (due to theater count loss / spidey) over the weekend will give 1.1m weekend for 168.7m.

~2x the weekend more to it's run will give it 171m final dom.

And if it sticks around on the lower side, then 172m dom.

With Cars 3 potentially going under 1M Wednesday/Thursday (I am expecting 40-50% falls for all movies), I am wondering if it will even be in theaters when the Pixar Labor Day expansion comes along. Most of their movies are still doing decent enough business prior to the expansion, won't be the case this time around.

So Cars 3 missing $400M?

I don't think so. Lot of it's OS markets are post DM3. If it get a China release then can do 450.
