As Sleepy Hollow wraps up production, Endless Animation announces production on its second adult animation as well as it’s fifth original feature: the sci-fi western Rust

Rust takes place in the 2100s in futuristic America as climate change has ravaged the planet. In order to adapt to the change, humans have became at least partly cybernetic as a popular new energy source dubbed Rust is being fought over. Code (Benjamin Diskin), a traveling rogue cowboy settles in New Bolt Town as he must defend the town from the control of a greedy land owner and their assortment of goons.

Written and directed by the Academy Award winning Imagine? series creator and cartoon guru with hits like Dexter Laboratory, Sym Bionic Titan and Primal, Genndy Tartakovsky, Rust will aim for March 27th, Y10. Genndy is unsure if it’ll be rated PG-13 or R as it depends very much on the direction they take. Rust will also be entirely traditionally animated as well.

In a move to make up for continued production setbacks, Cookie Pictures Animation intends to release four animated films in Year 10, followed by an additional three productions in Year 11. Earlier this weekend, Cookie Pictures updated their overall studio plans and slotted a total of seven animated films to be put into production and released within the following two years. These include:

Hilda and the Black Forest, the sequel to Hilda and the Midnight Giant that aims to take the franchise in a darker, heavier direction than its predecessor. The film is directed by Over the Garden Wall's Patrick McHale and production is ongoing, albeit the studio needed additional time to work on the story, hence the push from Year 9. The film is currently aiming for a November or December Y10 release. Production cost is estimated at $150 million.

Florence, the animated slice-of-life romantic comedy-drama directed by Pixar artist Madeline Sharafian. The film continues to aim for a Valentine's Day window, now in Year 10. Production cost is estimated at $45 million.

Anya's Ghost, based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Vera Brosgol and directed by fellow Pixar alumni Rosana Sullivan. The film about a Russian-American emigré named Anya who begrudgingly befriends a naive-minded ghost from the early 20th century is aiming for a summer release at the moment. Production cost is estimated at $65 million.

Cassie and Marion Save the Universe, the third film in Hourglass Pictures' Bounty Hamster saga, now being produced by Cookie Pictures Animation with the full blessing of former Hourglass heads. Cookie Pictures has gone as far as stating that they have no interest in a full-on reboot of the franchise, opting instead to court director David Soren and main cast members Charlie Day, Sophia Lillis, and Yara Shahidi to return in their roles.

The plot, intended to pick up on story threads left off after Two Lonely Bounty Hunters, would introduce Jonathan Majors as Equinox Blazenback II (teased in the post-credit scene of Lonely Bounty Hunters), and actor Matt Damon as the film's main antagonist. Marion's swallowing abilities is rumored to be a major plot element, with  Damon's villain intending to steal his powers in order to enact a larger master scheme. Production cost is estimated at $175 million, and the film looks to be released sometime in Y11. No space opera cameos are rumored at this time.

The Legend of Zelda: Secret of the Guardians, the long-gestating adaptation of the Nintendo franchise. With the departure of director Travis Knight due to workplace controversies, Into the Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey is stepping in to oversee development from this point forward. Production cost is estimated at $160 million, and the film is set for release in the spring of Y11.

An Untitled Tomm Moore Fantasy Project, helmed by Wolfwalkers director Tomm Moore, obviously, is also set for a Y11 release. The film would be a collaboration with Wolfwalkers studio Cartoon Saloon, and draw from elements of the King Arthur mythology to create an original plot. Production cost is estimated at $100 million, and the film would see a release sometime during the winter of Y11.

Lastly, the studio would like to discuss its fourth and final Y10 release. His Face All Red, based on the short horror webcomic by Emily Carrol, will mark the studio's second film to be directed by The Red Turtle and Everything We Miss shepherd Michaël Dudok de Wit, the Dutch animation director who won an Academy Award in 2000 for his short film Father and Daughter and later won in Year 8 for MissFace All Red will be the animation studio's first straight up horror production, drawing from films such as The WitchIt Comes at Night, M. Night Shyamalan's The Village, and among many others.

The synopsis, which greatly expands upon the source material, goes as follows:

Quote

Set in an isolated New England town in the late 19th century, 'His Face All Red' follows Kittridge Porter, a shy, seclusive, soft-spoken blacksmith who's whole life has been in the shadow of his brawny, brave, and extroverted older brother, Daniel. Daniel is the talk of the town, especially now as gossip starts to swirl surrounding his engagement to the mayor's daughter, Sarah, who also happens to have been Kittridge's childhood crush.

The engagement remains a sore topic between Daniel and Kittridge as the wedding day approaches, but that's in part because it serves as a moment of existential crisis for the younger brother. Already in his thirties, Kittridge has watched so many opportunities for him to live a happy life pass him by, and the loss of his own youth has led him to fear that he'll be fated to spend the rest of his life in solitude — watching as the world experiences love, loss, and change all around him, while he remains where he's always been.

Then, as fate would have it, a mysterious beast begins to intrude on the town and slaughter its vital livestock, prompting a scarcity panic among the town locals. It is quickly deduced that the beast's origin stems from the dark woods beyond the town's borders, a treacherous place even the bravest of souls dare not enter. But with their livestock depleting in numbers by the night, something has to be done, and in a moment of desperate need for validation, Kittridge volunteers to go out and hunt down the creature. When he is met with derision and mockery, Daniel steps in to aid Kittridge on his quest, hoping the journey would allow them to rekindle as brothers.

During their attempts to slay the creature, however, Daniel ends up being killed under highly suspicious circumstances. Fearing he'll be blamed for a death even he himself is not sure how it even happened, Kittridge buries his brother and returns to the village having to tell two lies — That the beast was successfully eradicated, and that Daniel had perished in a selfless sacrifice. Kittridge earns respect from the locals as the one who made it out, and he even earns the affections of Sarah herself, hoping to find refuge with Kittridge as she mourns the loss of Daniel.

Weeks pass, and to Kittridge's fortune, there are no further sightings of the beast. However, only one fortnight after his death, Daniel reemerges from the woods, somehow alive and with an apparent score to settle with his own brother.

How is he alive? Was he ever dead? Is the beast still stalking the woods outside? Who, or what, did Kittridge really end up burying that night, and will it come back to haunt him and his village?

As confusion and questions start to mount over Daniel's return, Kittridge finds himself in a race against time to untangle the mystery, and perhaps expose an even greater threat lying underneath.

Cookie Pictures CEO Sebastian Peters describes His Face All Red as "a horror-mystery story doubling as a family conflict drama". Unlike Dudok de Wit's Everything We Miss, Face All Red will be much more straightforward in its narrative, and the studio hopes the horror and mystery angle will help it differentiate itself from most other CAYOM animated offerings.

One question remaining is whether the film will sport an R-rating or join the studio's already planned offering of PG-13 content, which includes Anya's Ghost and Florence. "We're keeping both doors open," Peters says, "It all depends on where we intend to take the final product, and what rating would work to the film's benefit or to its detriment. I think, either way, it's going to be dramatic and scary."

The studio also revealed the voice cast for the film, which includes:

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSVRrqdITOLOTku1sAQEF4Australian-actor-Chris-Hemsworth-2019.jpJulia-Garner-photo-credit-Tiffany-Nicholsean-bean-alec-trevelyan-goldeneye.jpgimage-w856.jpg?size=800x

  • Robert Pattinson as Kittridge. Already on Cookie Pictures's radar with his upcoming role in the fourth Scavenger Wars film, Peters sought for Pattinson to provide a "moody, yet awkward" vibe to his vocal performance.
  • Chris Hemsworth as Daniel. Peters describes Hemsworth's vocal performance as the polar opposite of Pattinson's — vibrant, loud, boorish, and in your face. The film will draw from his career playing Thor and other brawny action-hero types, but use those influences to satirize rather than evoke. "Daniel prior to his death may seek to be kind to his brother, but he is still an oaf. After he returns from his grave, however... well, he's all oaf, and a possibly dangerous one at that."
  • Julia Garner as Sarah. Sarah is the bright star of the town, and finding her whole world being turned upside down when her fiancée perishes only to return from the grave, she goes on her own journey of trying to uncover what's really going on beneath the surface.
  • Sean Bean as Adrian, the town mayor and Sarah's father. Following his brief stint in the second Scavenger Wars film, Cookie Pictures intends for Bean to become a more prominent mainstay in the studio's catalog, hoping to have him appear in multiple projects down the road. "Adrian is the wisest figure in town, and one of the few people who respects Kittridge even before his newfound fame. He seeks a diplomatic resolution to everything that comes up as Kittridge's brother returns, though he may not be truly aware of what horrors he and his town might be dealing with."
  • Margaret Qualley as Eodíne. A flower girl whose presence is as confounding as everything else, Eodíne claims to hail from the town, yet her strange and sometimes unsettling mannerisms lead the townsfolk to question whether she might even be of this earth. "She strikes this bizarre sort of friendship with Kittridge early on, and as things only get stranger, her apparent knowledge of the dark woods and the beast that inhabits it comes into question."

His Face All Red is set to be produced at a cost of $40 million and is aiming for a Fall Y10 release, although that could change depending on how the schedule pans out with the studio's three other releases.

"I think it helps that only one of our four releases in Year 10 has a tentpole production cost, meaning we can take more chances with our release strategies and adjust everything accordingly," Peters explains, "Everything We Miss performed very well as a platform release, and we could look to that approach again with a few of our upcoming films. It's exciting that we have a mish-and-mash of different films of different scales currently in development, and we hope to bring them all before audiences in due time."

A few additional films, such as the long-gestating Panthera and an animated adaptation of the John Carter/Barsoom novels are also in the works, but the studio is unable to provide any updates as of yet.

Quick update: Cookie Pictures Animation has confirmed that the John Carter/Barsoom animated reboot will retain the title of Warlord of Mars. The film will feature the voice of John Krasinski as John Carter and be directed by Adam Conarroe and Patrick Stannard, lead animation directors on Masters of the Universe: Revelation. The film’s art-style would draw heavily from the works of Frank Frazetta, and the plot would tell an original story in the Barsoom setting while serving as its own follow-up to A Princess of Mars (the first novel in the series). Production cost is expected to be $125 million, and the film is set for a Y12 release with a PG-13 rating.

Recent test screenings for the adaptation of a critically acclaimed novel, American Spy - directed by Ava DuVernay and based off the book by Lauren Wilkinson - are making officials at Phoenix Fire Entertainment excited about its upcoming prospects. In fact, Phoenix Fire is indeed fast-tracking production of one of its next blockbusters for Y10, which it too is a big novel adaptation.

81EQNKgH9iL.jpg

Cloud Cuckoo Land, based on Anthony Doerr's novel of the same name, will be directed by Chad Hartigan, recent director of the sci-fi drama Little Fish.

It tells the story of five different people in multiple different points of time - from Ancient Constantinople, through World War II, the present, and all the way to the 22nd Century. Uniting them all is an ancient work of literature titled "Cloud Cuckoo Land." The book, which covers a vast number of perspectives and shifting narratives, will be cinematically framed by Hartigan in a form akin to the Wachowski sisters and Tom Tykwer's adaptation of Cloud Atlas from 2010.

No word on who will be in the film's cast at the moment.

Cloud Cuckoo Land is set to release in Y10, as one of three Phoenix Fire Entertainment films in IMAX (the other two being MBWII: The Second Monster Bug Wars, and the third is yet to be defined, but choices are being rundown, with a strong possibility being the LittleBigPlanet animated film, which has now been retitled Sackboy/Sackgirl).

Endless Animation announces energizing Y10 through Y12 slate.

After a middling Y8 and complicated matters of outside the CAYOM industry issues, Xavier B. Irving had to take the backburner on a lot of projects for Y9, and a massive rehaul of how the studio approaches animation after unsatisfactory results Y7 and Y8. “At the end of the day, we have been letting storytelling not be as strong as it was. We have yet to evolve as a studio and in order to go on, nay, continue in the game is to change our approach” said Irving in a press release.

One of the things, as Irving notes in the release, is the approach on animation, as Endless Animation is still committed to doing 3 films a year but is including more contemporary adult skewing PG-13 and R animations. “We have gone from a premiere name in animation, to a non-factor within the span of two years, our quality and morale has been dwindling because of inability to grow, and apologizes to our fans.” Since Y9 has two family animations with Matilda and the Night Children and Inspector Gadget and Penny and one contemporary animation in Sleepy Hollow, the idea is to trade off every year. For example, Y10 will see 2 contemporary animations and 1 family animation.

Budgets for movies will range anywhere from $50m-$175m dollars regardless of rating or genre as Irving announces the lineup.

Y10

Rust - March 27th, Y10 - Genndy Tartakovsky (Can You Imagine?, Primal, the upcoming Fixed) - Traditional Animation/Sci-fi/Western

Rust was previously announced earlier this week, as production has started on Endless’ second adult animation as well as it’s fifth original feature: the sci-fi western Rust.

Genndy is unsure if it’ll be rated PG-13 or R as it depends very much on the direction they take but is aiming for a PG-13, as Genndy noted the slate for Y10 has a PG movie and a R rated one, a PG-13 might be the spice needed to diversify. Rust will also be entirely traditionally animated as well and is aiming at a 60m-80m budget. Irving announces the rest of the cast today as he says it’ll be all practicing voice actors and actresses as part of the cast:

  • Olivia Olson (Adventure Time, Toons v Reality)

  • Phil LaMarr (Static Shock, Samurai Jack)

  • Carlos Alazraqui (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts)

  • Kari Wahlgren (FLCL, Final Fantasy XII)

  • Clancy Brown (Detroit: Become Human, Justice League)

  • Nadji Jeter (Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Spider-Man (2018))

  • Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us, Heremias and Sylvarius)

  • Karen Fuhukara (Netflix’s She-Ra, Sleepy Hollow)

Lovely Buddies - June 12th, Y10 - Ian Jones-Quartery (OK KO: Let’s Be Heroes, writer of Matilda and the Night Children) - CG Animation/Sci-fi/Comedy

The Lovely Buddies defined the world back in the 1980s, as loveable plush toys that spread love but what we didn’t know is that they’re an ancient alien species responsible for upholding the balance of love across the world and feeding off of love, going from planet to planet. However, when the Earth is deemed to have critically low love levels, the Lovely Buddies are forced to leave Earth and find a new planet… which they’ll do by making their presence known and prepare to exterminate all organic life on Earth. With a week until the destruction of Earth, a an optimistic and high ranking Lovely Buddy officer (Ashly Burch) teams up with two of our planets greatest scientists (Jeff Goldblum and Angela Bassett), who also happen to be very bitter exes come up with a reason on why Earth should be spared. And maybe re-evaluate and redefine love and it’s limits along the way.

Jones-Quartery will make his debut directing feature here as he pens the script with his partner Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe, Can You Imagine?, Notes From The Otherspace). Jones-Quartery notes the movie isn’t really an alien invasion or a romantic comedy where the couple gets back together or about self-love but rather the relationships we make, and why some fall apart and why some are worth keeping.

Lyrical - Thanksgiving Y10 - F Gary Grey (Green Lantern Corps: Rise of the Manhunters, Tarzan, Straight Outta Compton) and Byron Howard (Tangled, Encanto) - CG-2D Animation/Musical/Drama/Romance

Originally this project started off as a failed Y3 in development feature as Bullets and Lyrics, a rap musical that had story issues. However, sometime in Y8, F Gary Grey came up with a way to do it through the medium of animation, partnering with animation guru Byron Howard, who had experience in both fields to help him.

Lyrical is a hard-R romantic rap musical that tells the story of a struggling rapper trying to make their name known in the world and a brilliant lyricist forming a partnership both business-wise and romantic-wise as it shows their rise and fall over the years. Voicing the two leads are Donald Glover (Atlanta, Gateways) and Dua Lipa (Argylle). Lyrical will use Endless’ Worldmeander software for animation and whilst details are still hush, Grey wanted the movie to feel like a feature length music video in terms of design. Kendrick Lamar (Black Panther: The Album, To Pimp a Butterfly)will write the raps for the movie as well.

Cupid INC - Valentine's Day weekend Y11 - Molly Ostertag (The Witch Boy, The Owl House) - Traditional Animation/Rom-Com

Cupid INC is a third of love themed movies, Irving points out. This PG-13 romantic comedy tells the story of a lovelorn cherub fleeing their home in order to better understand love themselves goes to Earth. Said cherub winds up running the secret facets of the online dating game helping humans find love on Earth.

Dove - Summer Y11 - Jorge R Gutierrez (El Tigre, Book of Life, Maya and the Three) - CG Animation/Superhero

Irving always wanted Gutierrez to do a cayom film, even trying to obtain the rights of Kung Fu Space Punch back in the day but couldn't. Dove is an original superhero movie about an all powerful and beloved superheroine who refuses to fight or harm her opponents. Dove must face a villain who steals the superpowers of other heroes in order to be the strongest being in the world, but how does an immovable object meet an unstoppable force?

Gutierrez was called to the project as he found it fun to make these sweeping action sequences and the idea of this hero who refuse to fight not out of fear but out of love for life.

Gateways: The Gates to Eternity and Gateways: Reboot and Revise - Christmas Y11 and Summer Y12 - Jennifer Yuh Nelson (the Kung Fu Panda series, Spark: A Hero’s Promise) - CG/2D Animation/Sci-Fi/Adventure

Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda 2, Spark: A Hero’s Promise, the upcoming Summer Wars) will now direct the project, with a script from Academy Award winner Pete Docter (Inside Out, To The Moon, Gateways) and Brenda Chapman (Brave, Heremias). McKenna Grace, Donald Glover, and Awkwafina have signed on to return their original roles as new cast members join or in talks of joining. More plot details are expected next month but the brief summary is being described as taking place 3 years after Gateways, as Bailee, Levi, Magi and Stripes have gotten into the groove of their odd nuclear family as things get dicey for stability as a two threats collide: the end of the multiverse as we know it and Levi’s past coming to haunt him.

Samuel L. Jackson (Django Unchained, The Incredibles) will voice the father figure/mentor of Levi and one of the first watchers. SLJ’s character is described as a religious zealot who wants to make the Watchers great again. Kelly Marie Tran (Green Lantern Corps: Home, Raya and The Last Dragon) will voice the lead villain. Mark Hamill (Batman: The Animated Series, the Star Wars franchise), Danny Pudi (Community, The Number One Dime), Anthony Rannelis (The Book of Mormon, The Prom) and Seychelle Gabriel (The Legend of Korra, Samurai Pizza Cats 2) have all signed on as cast members. Due to the scope of the project, it'll be split up into 2 movies with a reported $200m budget per installment.

2 more untitled contemporary animations will come out Y12 alongside the newest Gateways but it's unknown which will go the furthest in development.

After two years of hiatus, Lager Pictures is set to make its grand return to cinemas in Y10. Following a thorough re-structuring of the company, studio co-founder and CEO Christopher Lager announced that the studio aims to produce feature films more consistently going forward. Despite the studio’s previous reputation of limited yearly output, Lager went on record to state the studio would be “dedicated to releasing a minimum of at least four films a year, every year, with potential room for more, starting in Y10”.

Among the four works set for release next year, Lager Pictures is positioning the Animated Epic Fantasy film, Berserk: The Golden Age, as the studio’s big tentpole release for the year. Based on the influential manga by the late Kentaro Miura, the film will be directed by visionary filmmaker Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Justice League, God of War), marking this as his second animated feature after 2010’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. The animation style is reported to be a stylized blend of 2D and 3D animation meant to emulate and capture Moira’s distinct art style. Snyder mentioned Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as a visual reference point that influenced the particular style, a deviation from the more photo-realistic CG look of ‘Guardians’. It will be produced under the studio’s subsidiary, Lager Pictures Animation.

Snyder confirmed that the film would adapt the first half of the manga’s most arguably well-known storyline, The Golden Age arc. He also added that a potential sequel would cover the second half of the arc. The film follows Guts, a lone teenage warrior in a medieval Europe-inspired dark fantasy world. His fearsome reputation as a skilled swordsman catches the eye of Griffith, the charismatic leader of a mercenary group known as the Band of the Hawk. After an initial conflict with each other, Guts joins forces with the Band to help Griffith achieve his dream of creating his own kingdom. As their fight against rival nations and unspeakable supernatural forces persists, Guts finds himself conflicted over the true nature of his purpose in life - serving others or pursuing his own unknown dream.

@Rorschach I expect this to be as close to the source material as possible that means 2 films set entirely on a boat with an 8 year gap between release dates

Evolutionary Breakthrough at Fossil Record?

In an exclusive interview, Mark Pierce, CEO of Fossil Record Animation, made a small announcement with what could be major implications for the North Carolina-based studio's future.

"Everything's been kinds of hands-off so far," Pierce said, when asked about the track record of animated films put out by the company. With the exception of last year's blockbuster Frankenstein Jr. (produced by children's film subsidiary The Workshop) Fossil Record has a tradition of casting relatively unknown actors and giving its movies low budgets. "We've sort of been trying to find our footing, and seeing what sort of movies land with the public. The idea of making separate brands for kids' movies and more mature movies was part of that."

The bombshell came when Pierce was asked a follow-up question, namely about what he believed could be done to make Fossil Record a major player on the cinematic world stage. "Franchise contracts are definitely going to help," said Pierce. "We already have Judge Dredd lined up under the Fossil Record banner, and Furby planned for the Workshop label. But what's going to be really important, given the critical reception of our past movies, is to improve communication between our subsidiaries. I said things have been hands-off around here so far, but it won't be that way in the future. Some new talent is being brought in to make sure of that."

Pierce didn't answer who that new talent might be, but speculation has been rampant.

Studio Groundswell is proud to announce that an adaptation of the crime manga/anime series Banana Fish will finally be coming to theaters in June of Y10. The film will be directed by Contraband2 Guns, and Beast filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur.

"We took a top-down view of the whole of the franchise and saw that if a few of its minor characters were cut, it would be more than possible to whittle the story down into an exciting two-hour film," said a spokesperson.

Groundswell is proud to announce that Oscar nominee Nick Robinson (Learning to Care) will play the role of young New York gang leader Ash Lynx. Opposite him, Mackenyu (Pacific Rim: Uprising, Netflix's One Piece) will star as Japanese photography apprentice Eiji Okumura.

Other cast members include Joel Kinnaman, Tadanobu Asian, Eddie Liu, Remy Hii, Ludi Lin, Winston Duke, Alicia Silverstone, Evan Alex, Alfie Allen, and Bobby Cannavale. Interestingly, Cannavale has replaced John Malkovich for the role of mafia boss Dino Golzine, with a spokesperson citing that the Groundswell executives believe Malkovich has aged out of the role.

Studio Groundswell is officially committing to releasing their fantasy action western, The Needles of Haystack County, in Y10! The film, directed by Ant-Man and The Mandalorian filmmaker Peyton Reed, will still star Dacre Montgomery and LaKeith Stanfield as Wesley Baker and Brian Baker, known colloquially as The Baker Brothers, who share the goal of reversing a mysterious curse that turned all the men of their sleepy village town into humanoid cactus people. Needles of Haystack County is film one of a series; in this film, Wes and Brian get a band together and follow a lead to a cure supposedly acquired by Lady Luck (Sandra Oh) and her ragtag posse of Chinese railroad workers gone rogue.

"The Needles of Haystack County is both an alternate-universe western and a revisionist western," said a spokesperson, "in the sense that it reimagines the western setting as a diverse place where folks of all types are heroes and villains. We won't shy away from shining a spotlight on the injustices of the time period and hope that the story of Wes and Brian, stepbrothers who form a lifelong bond stronger than skin and blood, motivates audiences to come together and be less afraid or exclusive regarding the people around them."

Studio Groundswell is proud to announce a collaboration with influential animator Jorge R. Gutierrez to create a 3D-animated action/comedy film tentatively titled Milk Ninja. The story follows an anthropomorphic brown cow in a Zootopia-ish city who either becomes a ninja or begins the story as part of a secret ninja clan. "We're not quite sure exactly where we're going with our story," said a spokesperson, "but there's a lot of ways we can take this."

Rosarios Dawson will star in the leading role, and the voice ensemble will be comprised predominantly of Hispanic voice performers. Groundswell has selected the specific date of September 18th, Y10 as a nod to Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15th—Oct. 15th).
