With that drop, and if Emoji keeps on following Smurfs 2, it'll do about $75M between Smurfs 2 unadjusted ($71M) and Surfs Up adjusted ($76M).

At 75m dom Emoji will have shown same legs as CU after a marginally better opening (24.5 vs 23.8).

CU did 72.85/23.85 = 3.055x. 75 dom will give Emoji that multiplier.

Their RT critics and audience scores are very dissimilar though audience score is closer (44% vs 64%) compared to the vastly different critic score (7% vs 86%).

Been covering the movie-news scene for a decade now... it's all in the wording (when someone "denies" a rumor publicly). Affleck... never really denied what The Hollywood Reporter spilled, and the author of said piece has been doing this stuff for 20+ years and also leaked the troubles behind Trank's Fantastic Four (oh boy do I have stories there) and Rogue One.

Odd that nobody reported on that Han Solo trouble before Lord and Miller were fired.

Pretty Ballsy for WB to put a straight war film in such a coveted Summer slot but it paid off. I did over predict it's overseas numbers but I do that a lot.

It's a Christopher Nolan movie first. It's a war movie second. Christopher Nolan could probably remake The Breakfast Club where it has one setting and it would probably still make 150 million.

@MinaTakla Despicable Me still making that money!

Broke the record this weekend for highest grossing animated franchise in history!

3.55 billion and counting!

Beat Shrek's 3.51 billion and Ice Age's 3.2 billion.

Excited to see where DM3 will end up worldwide!

The irony is not only is CU the better movie but Emoji will be remembered thanks to memes. (I'm curious to see if it'll damage SPA despite that they aren't big)

Anyone else think Grinch will do $350M+?

$300m is likely but I wonder if it won't be as successful OS as Dr Seuss doesn't sell well. The first Grinch film made most of its money domestic. I could see $300-330m domestic and $250-300m OS which would still be solid.

Extremely impressive on very small budgets.

Think the damage has been done, to have no film break $100m domestic this year must be a concern for Sony. It wouldn't be surprising if they decide to pull out of the animation space in a few years and close down SPA.

The only thing I had heard before that shit broke was L&M were intimidated by Woody Harrelson, a known shit-kicker but friendly.

They're good dudes and took the decision as best as anyone could given the timing of it all. Honestly there was no "bad guy" in this particular situation.
