Expectations for it were through the roof back in the day in general (it being his follow-up to Lord of the Rings and all) so yeah.

Considering there are people on these forums that think a film that made 620 million dom/1.3 billion WW was a financial disappointment, you may have just answered your own question

Fun Fact:  I had lunch a couple of times with him when Denver had a minor league team and he was a minor league ump.  My friend and his sister knew him and he'd let us use his comp tickets.
