His brother is claiming he was murdered, which would be an international incident if true

It's incredibly suspicious, given the circumstances (Wahl has been very outspoken about the WC and everything around it).  Not gonna leap to any conclusion but an investigation of what exactly happened has to be done and just taking the Qatari government's say so almost certainly isn't going to cut it.

This was Grant Wahl's last story, BTW:

He also got into a dustup over a pride flag shirt he was wearing in support of his brother.

Given the outpouring of grief going on right now on social media, I think it is very safe to say that Grant Wahl was near beloved by almost everyone who knew him.

If this was foul play calling it an "international incident" is putting it mildly, given the insane focus on the World Cup right now.

Some more context just now from the AP:

Quote

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Grant Wahl, one of the most well-known soccer writers in the United States, died early Saturday while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands.

U.S. media seated near him said Wahl was stricken while in the media tribute at Lusail Iconic Stadium during extra time and could not be revived.

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup. He wrote Monday that he had visited a hospital while in Qatar.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort. I didn’t have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.”

Wahl wrote that he had been among 82 journalists honored by FIFA and the international sports press association AIPS for attending eight or more World Cups.

A 1996 graduate of Princeton, Wahl worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball.

So..... Huh.  Dying so soon afterwards is...

Well, holding conclusions as I said.

It seems suspicious but like, they couldn't have killed him right? No one could possibly be stupid enough to think it wouldn't be found out? It would have to be poison or something and that would show up in his system. The way he described things above, I'm thinking perhaps a blood clot/stroke/heart attack.

It's possible he had an reaction to the antibiotics that were given.  Might not have even known he would be allergic to one particular type of antibiotic.  Or it could be "antibiotics" (something that wouldn't appear as a toxin under a casual glance).  Or he was misdiagnosed and the stress of overwork (among other things) caused a rare fatal result.  Or he was "misdiagnosed" if we want to be conspiratorial.

Like I said, withholding judgement until more is known.

Either way, just incredibly sad for all of his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.

sadly, people who aren't movie enthusiasts consider theaters and movies a form in crisis.

Indeed.

Studios next year are offering a smorgasbord of IP based movies so people will be given every reason to enjoy going to see movies again. If they don't, well, we can't say studios didn't try.

Gonna be fascinating to see just how addicted to Twitter people really are as Elon Musk gets drawn further and further into the QAnon/alt-right orbit.

The real problem as I see:

Twitter is very good at creating bubbles. My Twitter feed is exclusively wrestling related with a couple of news sources and like dog memes sprinkled in between. It’s very easy to ignore Elon and his ilk.

That said, I was shocked when I got an ad for Avatar, clicked on it to see the comments, and it was all right leaning men talking about how “woke” it looks and “how woke it is going to be”. So I don’t know if Twitter is now pushing those comments up more / ratio-ing them. That was a huge turn off.

I've actually reduced my Twitter usage by 90%. Only opened the app 3 times in the past week which was unthinkable a month ago.

Elections being done also helps. Also that Musk isn't exactly the president that we should care about his random ramblings. He was really hoping for a red wave by the way he was writing his tweets and is overcompensating now.

That's great news man, Musk has helped you get off twitter. No good comes from there
