i think partially it's just lanthimos's sense of humour that he puts characters in highly fucked up and emotional situations and have them react to it as flatly as possible. nicole kidman doesn't really do it though. she's almost too emotive to be contained by the style.

the kid who plays the son in Sacred Deer is gonna be the lead in jonah hill's directorial debut this year. was reading up on it and it sounds exactly like Lady Bird for dudes.

That works to the movie's advantage. She's the only character in the film that understands how fucked up the situation is; Farrell's character doesn't take it seriously enough.
