We also may be underrating Mary, Queen of Scots.  Currently has a 95% on RT.

Still don’t know about a BP nod, but Saorise or Theron could make a push (the women categories are just pretty competitive this year)

That’s true, I forgot to mention while they may all have the same shade of skin tone, they have varying shades of racism

You could say that's true for everyone, though. Everybody at least has implicit stereotypes of other people, especially based on their skin colors. For example, the family member, who was a tour guide of sorts when we were in New York City, informed us that oriental restaurants, such as the excellent Schezuan-Chinese place Han Dynasty that I recommend to everyone, are known to stereotype their customers; when the customer orders a spicy dish, how spicy the dish will be can vary from customer to customer based on their race. Of course, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, and a lot of potential conflicts are possibly detered because of it.

I do understand that you're probably joking around and that I'm sort of a fool for expanding on my viewpoint in the Best Picture thread in response to what is very likely to be a joke, and whether or not it's a joke, I do apologize for the rant. That being said, I am looking forward to seeing a diverse set of Oscar nominees in many categories, especially in the directing, writing, and acting categories--I don't know about you, but I'm still holding out hope for John David Washington.

Dang there’s no room for Oscar movie success with tent poles not taking a break anymore. A Star Is Born is the only Oscar worthy(not in my opinion, but others) movie the past 3 months to do extremely well. It’s been flop, after flop, after flop. Lol first man, the hate u give(not sure if this was ever in contention), green book, and widows. And the December releases like Beale street, queen of scots, and the favourite all have such high competition idk if any could break out.

this is the latest it's taken them to announce a host in a good while. even that year eddie murphy got fired and billy crystal jumped in that was all settled by now. they're probably having a hard time finding someone willing. maybe default to kimmel again which tbh would help keep the ratings low.

It feels like it’s been that way for a while, especially when the only time anyone seems to notice the host these days is when they bomb (see: Franco/Hathaway, NPH). Sorta become that gig no one wants. A part of me hopes that they will just go without a host one of these days (which, considering how bloated the ceremony has become in recent years, wouldn’t be a bad thing).

a star is born is populist enough. if it made zero more dollars it'd be the highest grossing best picture since return of the king fifteen years ago and that's still true with inflation. it's basically the one movie this year that's a big hit and feels like an "oscar movie".  can't see panther or poppins getting directing or screenplay nominations. i think they'll be nominated but not top 5.

I think it’s more about the perception of a movie being populist than whether or not it was a financial hit.  Id bet a few of the bigger heads in charge of some of the Oscar changes want a Black Panther win.

In their eyes it’d bury the “old and out of touch” controversy and further bury the OscarsSoWhite  controversy (if it wasn’t already buried).

Realistically, A Star is Born is the front runner right now.  That’s also why I’m thinking it’s the most in danger out of the contenders to underperform.

The arguments for it are eerily similar to La La Land.

But it's not the same situation. Many people argued last year that despite almost all things pointing to a Shape of Water/3BB run for the win they will both lose to either Lady Bird or Get Out because LLL lost to Moonlight. A Star is Born has great reviews but not the over the top ones that LLL had and rubbed many people the wrong way. Also it doesn't fit the technical achievement that will sweep the techs anyway narrative that so many recent runner-ups had including LLL.

Something might emerge that will beat it, no one knows shit about who's winning until the Guild awards anyway. But I don't see how Roma is gonna be the "Moonlight" to take it down. I don't see how a netflix movie from a Director already hugely rewarded just 5 years ago is gonna generate enough of a consesus to win.
