The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones were very poorly received, you would hope the TFA and TLJ what perform better considering they're critically acclaimed (lol).

A movie can be very good/critically acclaimed and still underperform since the GA doesnt agree with critics sometimes. See Paddington 2: One of the best reviews-movies of all time basically tanking in North America. At the same time you can have mediocre/shitty films performing really well (Transformers 2, Suicide Squad, TPM, Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, Minions to name a few.

TPH performed exceptionally. But, yes, three years the sour aftertaste definitely had an impact on AotC OW DOM. That and AotC wasn't very well well liked by audiences or critics.

So, MoviePass ran a promotion where if you saw I, Tonya by Friday, you were automatically entered to win 10 MoviePass annual subscriptions.  They've also been sending out e-mails promoting the film.

I'll be curious to see if MoviePass will be sending out a press release revealing how many members actually went to see the film this weekend.

The CEO mentioned I,Tonya specifically and that they are receiving a small amount back from the distributor on confirmed tickets they sell. So...moviepass pays for 100% of the ticket and gets back..I dunno...1%? 2%?  Makes a lot of sense....

This company is a scam for anyone who follows the stock.  The CEO came on CNBC and Bloomberg to pitch they were going to consider a cryptocurrency (moviepasscoin = the next bitcoin?)...this led to a spike in the stock briefly and they sold more shares.  CEO interview is horrendous and he has no idea what they would actually use a coin for when asked.  Unlike subscriptions through Regal, Cinemark, AMC this is a third party that is unwelcome and has no integration into the process/product.  They are just scamming investors and throwing the money out to moviegoers which is great if you are a moviegoer.

I also don't see how a company with a TOTAL worth (not including the debt) of ~100million is going to significantly disrupt an industry where $11 Billion+ in tickets is sold per year, but I guess the money out of thin air theory is still out there.  To take 10% of the marketshare these guys would need to fool investors into giving them 1.2 Billion dollars.  An amount that buys 100% of the company 10+ times over.  The lasting effect on moviegoers from this scam is a point of discussion I guess, but moviepass is certainly not here to stay...

Avatar shouldn't be in this list....it's not a masterpiece, but surely a more than satisfying pop-corn flick...

It doesn't matter what you think. Firs your taste in movies is horrible and second the only movies you like and adore are from Warner Bros!

You must have thought you could curry favor with the veteran clown element around here, get some cheap "likes" to boost your anemic score with this? Only explanation i can think of for such a lame, sense-dulling comment.  :sadno:

Yes but there have been other more than satisfying popcorn flicks .... that didn't do $750m DOM and $2.7 Billion (still can't wrap my mind around that) WW.

well, if a nostalgic-fueled element can drive multiple billions films like JW, SW7 , 3D wow factor would drive avatar to 760.5m and 2.79b WW easily as avatar was the sole beneficiary during 3D-boom period for 3 months....

Bet Sony's being somewhat conservative again and Jumanji finishes at $35M+. Again, I expect all of the 4 day actuals to come in a little or a lot higher for just about everything due to the inclement weather Friday night through Saturday night in many of the states.

Ugh, fuck America though. Paddington deserved to make twice as much as it did. Even more than twice as much.

Please, if you haven't seen this, do it as soon as possible.
