TomCruiseTop
With it being around half way through the year I thought it'd be a good time for us to share the best films released this year that we've seen so far with one another. My top 10 for this year (so far): Burning The Wild Pear Tree Shoplifters Isle of Dogs Sunday's Illness Dogman Ekvtime: Man of God Utøya 22. juli A Quiet Place Incredibles 2 List is entirely subjective of course, just wanted to share! If I'm honest this year hasn't blown me away so far, I've seen 67 movies so far that were released this year (possibly released earlier in areas outside Europe, I sometimes do miss those dates) and they've not really done massive amounts for me. I do look forward to seeing more throughout the year though, and of course as we see more Oscar contenders start to come out in the latter half of the year. (N.B. Saw a good few of my list at various festivals, mostly Berlin, just for the curious).

SLAM!
It's hard for me to rank the movies that I've really thought highly of so far. My five favorites films (that I've seen) of 2018 so far are as follows (strictly listed in alphabetical order): 1) Annihilation This is a really groundbreaking science fiction film that goes deep and is presented expertly. It was awesome to watch this alongside my enrollment in a introductory Biology class at college. 2) Black Panther Look, The Dark Knight is definitely my number one superhero film, but this comes in a close second, because it's not afraid to ask truly compelling questions. 3) The Death of Stalin The script is impeccable and the acting is very well done. As a fan of dry comedy such as Parks and Recreation, this hit my funny bone. The ending is a stomach-churner, however. This is a film about Soviet Russia, after all. 4) Isle of Dogs Having never seen Fantastic Mr. Fox, I jumped at the chance to see this (as Moonrise Kingdom is my subjective favorite film of all time), and I was not left disappointed by the stunning artistry, as well as the deepest world Anderson has ever shown viewers. 5) A Quiet Place This film is anything but quiet about its brilliance. John Krasinski is achieving the American Dream. What an experience to be had, this film is. Special shout outs to other films I also find substantial and significant thus far: Adrift, Avengers: Infinity War, Game Night, I Can Only Imagine, and The Incredibles 2.
Jmart
Since it’s so early, instead of just posting the list, I’ll breakdown the chances of the films that are currently in my top ten of staying in the top ten by the end of the year (most likely Oscar season). Guaranteed - A+ 1. Paddington 2 The only question is whether or not it’ll stay in the top spot. The original did in 2015. I had three A+ movies last year. 90-95% - A 2. The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling 3. Game Night The only way these two don’t make the final cut is if all the Oscar-bait films are amazing. I only had one these last year. Last Jedi was the lone one to make the cut. 50-75% - A- 4. Incredibles 2 5. Avengers: Infinity War I had a bunch of four-star/A- films on my list last year so these are up in the air. Incredibles 2 will probably make it as I’d put in the upper-tier of this column. Avengers, while quite good, probably won’t unless a lot of films in the fall disappoint. <25% - B+ 6. A Quiet Place 7. Deadpool 2 8. Chappaquiddick 9. Life of the Party 10. Blockers If these movies make it... Edited July 2, 2018 by Jmart

dxmatrixdt
yay, open discussion (sort of) for 2018 films. I encourage anyone to go here and rank their movies seen/remembered every year. https://forums.boxofficetheory.com/forum/11-lights-camera-favorites/ @JamesCameronScholar could you rank all the movies you've seen for 2018? I'm curious where you put Maze Runner 3 and Pacific Rim 2. Edited July 3, 2018 by mathemetrics

Winchester - 77 (basically the only one I've seen this year that I am at + or - for thumbs up/down and needs re-evaluation) - watched half of A Wrinkle in Time. was not really paying attention. I loved the way they did the animation though. It felt like they all appeared somewhere inside a video game. (80-90)/100 range. Here is are some more I need to see + about 20 more I didn't look up further + whatever is on Netflix that I likely won't see unless the awards forces me to see it. Now that is has been 6 months into the year, red boxes will probably be holding more than 50 titles right now.
