I always like to wonder what the noms would be if it was still five. Feels like this year would be Roma, Green Book, Black Kkklansman, The Favourite, and then Panther/ASIB probably battling for the last spot (though I guess McKay did make it into Director). 

I think Bohemian Rhapsody would have nabbed that last spot. Despite all the complaining online, it's abundantly clear that the industry loved the film - or at least felt that it was owed something for being a massive success despite the messy production and involvement of Bryan Singer. 

 

The snub for A Star Is Born would have been reminiscent of the surprise snub for Dreamgirls 12 years ago: a film that just about everyone assumed would take off as a frontrunner but never did and ended up missing out on a Picture nod altogether.

As for me, my problem with the movie being nominated for Best Picture is that I genuinely don’t think it was good enough to earn it. Sure, it was an enjoyable enough movie, but even as far as Marvel movies of 2018 are concerned, I preferred Infinity War. Aside from having a predominantly black cast (which, don’t get me wrong, is a big deal), there was nothing really daring or out of the ordinary about it. Sure, it discussed some serious themes and ideas, but it mostly only paid lip service to that stuff. Apart from that, it was a fairly straightforward Marvel movie with an unremarkable third act. 

 

I’m not trying to seem like a whiny manchild or whatever, but i don’t think the Best Picture nod should go to a movie just because it has a high Rotten Tomatoes score.

 

 

i don't care for black panther but honestly how anyone can say with a straight face that Black Panther is not "good enough" for a best picture, when bohemian rhapsody is there...
