Here’s a hot one. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and Charles D. King’s MACRO (Mudbound) are producing movie Jesus Was My Homeboy, about iconic Black Panther Party member Fred Hampton, for Warner Bros.

Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya is in talks to star as activist Hampton with Atlanta and Sorry To Bother You star Lakeith Stanfield in talks to play William O’Neal, the man who betrayed Hampton to the FBI. Shaka King (Newlyweeds) will direct and produce from a script he wrote with Will Berson (Sea Oak).

The film, which will be co-financed by WB and MACRO, will follow the rise and untimely demise of Hampton as seen through O’Neal’s eyes. It will explore how the FBI infiltrated the Black Panthers, the psychology of their informant and the notorious assassination of the young political leader who died aged only 21.

Executive producers are Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler and MACRO’s Kim Roth and Poppy Hanks. The screenplay is based on a story originated by Shaka King, Berson and the Lucas Bros.

Ryan Coogler attaching himself to a movie about a Black Panther? Doubt that's gonna go well

If WB.. let them do it 'right', I'm in watching it.

What makes me a bit skeptical is a bit it seems lacking the background about Hampton, the wys... see

= I hope there will be no strange balance of POVs, not only a focus on the technical side of the ~ government ordered murder.

The Black Panther Party (BPP), originally the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, was a political organization founded by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in October 1966

There are opinions they picked the name for the SH. Not sure if true

Review embargo lifts on Tuesday. Really interested to see if this movie actually addresses Fred Hampton's very radical socialist talking points or if it's just going to completely dilute that core aspect of him like so many films about socialist revolutionaries have to make them more palatable for mainstream audiences. Considering that Sasha Stone (who's very much a neo-lib) liked this, it sadly seems like it won't at all explore that.
