I'm just at an utter loss for words. Leave No Trace? Beale Street? Blackkklansman? All smart, thoughtful, films written with a respect for the medium of film. But no, lets give it to some shitty Spiderman animated film made by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Because it's so funny and smart and it's got a black cast and its got edgy animation and it made me feel warm and fuzzy. !

“Music is essentially twelve notes between any octave. Twelve notes and the octave repeats.  It’s the same story, told over and over.  Forever.  All any artist can offer the world is how they see those twelve notes.”

 

Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born is the fourth incarnation of the tragic love affair between Norman Maine, a fading star, and Esther Blodgett, his young ingenue.  The original 1937 stars Janet Gaynor and Fedric March.  The 1954 version stars Judy Garland and James Mason.  The 1976 version stars Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson as Esther and Norman (now John Howard).  For a more detailed breakdown on each version, I recommend the excellent Be Kind Rewind Comparison Video.  (And then go watch her whole channel, because she’s AMAZING.)

 

I still remember watching Bradley Cooper when he was Victor Garber’s side piece on Alias.  (Shot out to him for casting Greg Grunberg and Ron Rifkin in cameos!)  My inner sixteen-year-old self could not handle him the first time I saw A Star is Born.  He is transformative.

 

He worked for six months on capturing Jackson’s voice. He learned how to sing and play the guitar — and did it so well, he performed at Glastonbury Musical Festival and Coachella and didn’t get booed off the stage. He co-wrote his own music with Lukas Nelson, Willie’s son.  He is so beyond excellent in this film that it’s a travesty he doesn’t have an Oscar for it.  T R A V E S T Y.

 

His Jackson Maine walks the perfect line between sensitive, caring, and completely taken with Ally, while still being a critical, controlling asshole.  It felt like an honest depiction of a man with a serious addiction (alcoholism) and illness (hearing issues).  I appreciate they tied his drinking in with his health issues, because as someone who's dealt with addicts, it made me both angry AND sympathetic toward him.

 

The key to A Star Is Born is The Star.  In the 1950's we had Judy.  In the 1970's we had Babs.  Now, we have Lady Gaga.  Let's not front, she's playing herself (but, it's okay, so did Babs.) Like Cooper, Lady Gaga leaves it all on screen.  Her performance is so open, and it allows us to really intimately understand Ally as an artist and person.  I also appreciate that Cooper and Gaga added in real parts of Gaga's history -- her singing Le Vie En Rose, her getting her start in drag clubs -- into the movie.  Or, maybe I just died cause it was Willam and Shangela!

 

Like the 1970s version, Jackson and Howard are rockstars.  So the soundtrack better be damn good.  It's out of this world.  My personal favorite song is "Always Remember Us This Way".  I think "I Don't Know What Love Is / Is That Alright?" are the most effective in the movie. I adore that even the "garbage pop songs" like Hair Body Face are still FUN, and they're vintage Fame Monster Gaga.

 

I think if I had one criticism of the film, Ally’s Manager isn’t nearly as effective as the 1954’s version’s Oliver Niles, the Studio Head, and Matt Libby, Norman and Esther’s publicist, at really driving home why Jackson Maine will destroy Ally’s career.

 

He references your basic concerns, but I think they missed an opportunity to explore how in 2018 fandom could react positively to them staying together (society’s love for comeback and redemption stories, a better understanding of alcoholism as a disease, etc.) or negatively (he’s an embarrassment to her, the time of Tammy Wynette is over, what message would it send to Ally’s young fans, etc.).

A Star is Born begins and ends with music.

Take a minute to think, to yourself, about that fact.

This film begins and ends with music.

But how does it begin with music? Well, there’s a black screen. Then, out from the soundscape comes the cheers of a passionate audience. An amplified guitar riff is played. The screen fades from black. Country musician Jackson Maine stands backstage, hidden away from the audience; he shoves a handful of prescription pills into his mouth and drinks a clear glass of mysterious liquid—some of it falls from his lips like a dripping faucet, but he doesn’t seem to notice. He is promptly ushered onto stage, much to the audience’s pleasure. He picks up a guitar and plays the same note over and over again—we see this through a camera that displays his inebriated point of view with curved edges around the image. A chord is struck. The crowd cheers. He’s escorted away in a limo moments later.

The film ends with music, as well. A broken woman in a cyan-colored dress—the same cyan present onstage when “Shallow” had been performed earlier in the film. The broken woman asks for the audience’s support, and she sings a ballad, lamenting a love which has been lost. The song ends. She stares into the camera. Cut to black.

This film is notable not for the way it begins and ends, but for the way it interweaves these two moments together. I don’t even need to say anything else about the plot of the film: you already know that the country musician’s addiction to drugs and alcohol was the root cause of the woman’s loss. That is how affective the beginning and ending this film is, and it is no secret that the middle parts of the film are just as strong and affective as the beginning and ending which I’ve mentioned.

A Star is Born is film auteur Bradley Cooper’s musical masterpiece. One can hope it’s not his last.
