US WEEKEND THREAD: Record 70.25 OW (highest grossing OW for an original horror)

Recommended Posts

Why are people bummed that an original horror movie is doing 6M in previews? I don't care if there was potential for a lot more, it's still a fucking original horror film sold entirely on the Jordan Peele hype post-Get Out, and it's gonna nearly double GO's opening. I think that's phenomenal, actually. Say what you will about Blumhouse, but even Happy Death Day 2U - which was, by all accounts, a gigantic disappointment compared to expectations - turned a big profit at the end of the day.

(And as for Pet Sematary, 30's opening sounds about right, yeah.... especially if Shazam doesn't break out beyond 50-60 range.)

Pet Sematary should do something like 35M with good legs and I think La Llorona does about 25M and falls off a cliff in weekend 2.

WB really screwed the pooch with La Llorona tbh. It was going to fall off a cliff no matter what, but they should have announced much earlier this took place in The Conjuring Universe instead of randomly announcing it with little fanfare (also premiering it at SXSW to a lukewarm response). With the branding, it could have at least came close to the Annabelle movies in terms of OW.

April 5 is gonna be a good weekend between Shazam and Pet Sematary. Add in Dumbo, Us, and Captain Marvel still making money and the box office is officially alive again.

To reference a D**ney hit

EXCLUSIVE, writethru Friday AM after Thursday 9:05PM update: Jordan Peele’s Us is now looking forward to a $6M+ Thursday night. That beats the preview nights of The Nun ($5.4M), A Quiet Place ($4.3M), and it’s just under the midnight previews of Paranormal Activity 2 ($6.3M, 31% of its $20.1M Friday for a $40.6M three-day). There’s buzz Us might even be at $7M, but Universal hasn’t made that official yet.

Wow, it hit nearly the same Thursday preview number as Halloween, which is massive considering Halloween was a franchise entry with decades of pent up nostalgia and an opening date relatively close to its name-sake holiday. Have a feeling it will either touch or cross 200M DOM.

Safe to say.....

@That One Guy

If it follows A Quiet Place and generates an 86.5M OW, it would only need about 3.39x legs to pass Sixth Sense. That's in the realm of possibility, but not a certainty. It really depends on its second weekend drop and how much impact Pet Sematary has on its third weekend.
