Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Regal Mayfaire Stadium 16 & IMAX

12:25 PM, 12/14/17, very sparsely attended

Previews (may not be in correct order)

Phantom Thread ("That looks different!" -my mom, spoken enthusiastically)

Proud Mary ("That's a first for her." - my mom, concerning Taraji P. Henson's role as an action heroine)

Fifty Shades Freed (ugh)

12 Strong (my mom, someone that got excited during a trailer for Thank You For Your Service, was completely silent for this one)

Downsizing (my mom's seen a trailer for this before, and she laughed at the moment when they're pouring vodka with a spicket, but she laughed at the gag this time too)

Isle of Dogs (my mom laughed at the end of this one too; I told her during the cast listing that I really like the director)

The Shape of Water ("That looks different..." - my mom, spoken much more wishy-washily)

During the film, my mom may have laughed once. I didn't laugh at all. In fact, we both did more gasping than laughing. The others in the audience were appropriately quiet, probably as engrossed as we were.

Someone may tell you that this film is comedic, but do not go to see this film, quite a peak into blinding bleakness, expecting a pure comedy. Only the most black-hearted of sadists would view this as a laugh riot. But it is a great artistic statement, though. Definitely worth seeing in theaters.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

December 14th, 7:00

Sold-Out

Trailers:

The Incredibles 2

Avengers: Infinity War

Black Panther

Crowd was surprisngly quiet for a Star Wars film opening night. Only a few of the comedic moments got some laughs and one scene towards the end got applause and a few cheers. They did applaud when the credits rolled, but the overall reaction in the theater seemed mixed.

The Last Jedi

10:15 AM

DBOX! Had me and six fifteen other people, some dude sat right next to me, and at first I wasn't sure if he knew the seats were reserved or if he had at spot, but I think he did.

50% Full

Trailers

Alita Battle Angel

A Quiet Place - one child near the front made a few comments and her parents shushed her.

A Wrinkle in Time

Early Man

As the movie was supposed to start, the projectionist showed Thor instead of Star Wars, but when people went out to tell someone it was quickly resolved and it was immediately switched to Star Wars.

Tons of laughs throughout, no cheering or anything but you can tell the audience was invested.

Well, at least the trailer is playing in front of Star Wars at all. It ensures that people will at least know about the film. Smart marketing from Pure Flix that is sure to go underestimated until the film's release.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

December 17, 3:40 PM, 100% full

Cineplex Scotiabank Theatre Chinook, Calgary AB | IMAX 2D

Trailers:

Ready Player One (no reactions)

Alita: Battle Angel (no reactions)

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (murmurs)

Avengers: Infinity War (ooooo's, OMG's and other excited reactions)

There were a couple other trailers but they escape me right now.

My crowd was pretty engaged. People were clearly antsy for the movie to start while the ads and trailers dragged on. There were laughs several times and there was a clear emotional response to a certain scene. Overall, a great theatre experience, but I would expect nothing less at a mega blockbuster like this.

Haven't heard of this so I’m assuming it’s a Pure Flix Movie

The Miracle Season is about the true story of an elite high school volleyball that perseveres after the team captain's tragic death. Distributed by LD Entertainment, it stars Helen Hunt and is directed by the director of Soul Surfer. It looks to be the usual modern small-scale sports fare like The Million Dollar Arm, McFarland USA, Secretariat, and the aforementioned Soul Surfer.

Based on information I've gotten from research, I absolutely hope that this film gets a wide release. For those that have not heard of it, it's about a stray dog that befriends a young soldier who is coming home from duty. The distributor, Fun Academy, has an absolute golden opportunity, because New Mutants is the only wide release option that is available on April 13th when this film is posted for limited release, and this could counter-program extremely effectively against New Mutants, which isn't for families at all.

I'm willing to bet that Fun Academy's knowledge of their opportunity is the exact reason why the trailer they could offer was placed in front of Coco.

(I think I get more passionate about smaller films than bigger ones nowadays! Whew!)
