Even if you removed all critics with active hate toward the project, the rest of the world just... doesn't care about this film. And the reviews were last minute. That was the writing on the wall.

 

And Disney/Marvel knows this, hence the most active promotion for this movie being on platforms they're in control of.

People were saying that critics would be overly nice to this film just because culture war, but I never bought that.

Certain US critics are something else.

 

The score could potentially go up, me thinks.

That only happens, if it happens, on the first film in a franchise. Sequels are always treated normally.

Quantumania didn't do very well but The Marvels is looking like it will be the MCU's true first unmitigated disaster.

 

Nah, it still reads as a forgettable mid movie rather than "so bad it's a sure-fire cult classic in making". Not to mention that MCU is multiple properties not one like Batman back in the 90s when cinematic universe concept didn't exist. So one undisputed flop won't have an impact on anything but sequel to the said flop and likely the degree in which they will use these characters going forward.

Unfortunately the next projects are Captain America 4, Thunderbolts and Deadpool 3. Two of those are probably looking at the same level of interest from audiences as The Marvels (possibly lower for Thunderbolts) and Deadpool 3 is already halfway through production and everything about it seems like it will be received below the first 2. They need a return to form with critical and audience reception, as well as box office hits to avoid the "it's dead" label - nothing about their immediate slate says that will happen.

As a Former Fan of the MCU, Disney had this bomb coming for a while now ever since Phrase 4 became a disappointment. All of those mediocre TV shows, their worsening quality of the movies, no clear plan so to speak and what seems to be a declineing quality of the CGI. All of those issues are coming home to roost.

Why does Deadpool 3 seem like it will be worse than the first two to you?

Brie will be there in Avengers for sure. But another Captain Marvel movie will be a question mark. I think they should do mini team ups like having her in next Shang Chi movie.

Not everything has to be “Citizen Kane.” But there’s no reason to settle for fan-servicing junk, either. Sorry, but “The Marvels” is where I draw the line.
