Y'all just love throwing Anne Hathaway under the bus bc she's Anne Hathaway and she's an easy target.

She was GREAT in that movie

the movie wasnt a catwoman focus. it was mainly bale - as it was the finale.

I really don't think that her performance is as impossible to beat as people think it is. It worked in the context of Batman Returns by being extremely campy, like a slightly more emotional version of Julie Newmar, but she's not impossible to beat at all.

If you don't see Pfeiffer's performance as one of the best in the entire genre, than I don't know what to say to you.  Plus, really... what is "camp" to you?  OK, there may be a "bit" of that in Batman Returns...but have you SEEN the two follow-ups?

The sequels being even more campy doesn't reduce Batman Returns camp at all. It has a scene where Catwoman just randomnly puts a bird into her mouth for no good reason at all, she got resurrected by cats, the third act involves penguins with explosives; if that's not extremely campy I don't know what is.

Remember that WB initially wanted JONAH HILL as Riddler and SETH ROGAN as Penguin. Would have been interesting.

Hill wanted to be Riddler; I think WB wanted him to be Penguin.

It is a highly apt comparison. Josh Hartnett was a nobody sans the artsy crowd in April of 2001 until Pearl Harbor opened in May and made him the countries biggest heartthrob, and then he headlined the war classic Black Hawk Down in December. In 2002, he made an absurd sex comedy a legitimate box office hit and was hand-picked by David Fincher to star The Black Dahlia. Early 2003, WB offered him $100 million for 3 movies as Superman in McGs film. He turns it down, is promptly given right of first refusal to be Chris Nolan's Batman, but also turns it down. His pop-culture influence rivaled anyone in the country at this time. He is all over magazines, the media speculates he is in the running for seemingly every major part. But he has the first crack in his armor when Hollywood Homicide flops- a role as a artsy cop doesn't jive with his image and audiences react poorly. In 2004, he continues down the "other" path and accepts the lead role in Brokeback Mountain but has to eventually opt out to finally Black Dahlia. He takes on a number of "different" adult roles and while he is generally well received, audiences don't care for this new "adult" version of him and by 2007, his time on the A list is officially over.

Bruh should have said yes to Superman...

Jerry Bruckheimer chose him over every other young actor to make him the next big thing in Hollywood and the media quickly followed suit. But yeah Hartnett the person pretty clearly wanted other things out of his carer. He is an obvious and high-profile example of someone who was defined by their image as a "young adult" and really struggled to be taken seriously when they tried to move past it. Superman and Batman fans alike were outraged when the studio made him their number one choice because he was viewed as a studio-produced wannabe DiCaprio (who, at the time, was not known as a huge dramatic actor), not the next Daniel Day Lewis.

TBH I still hold a grudge against him for not getting the McG/Abrams superman movies made. They would have been HUGE. Instead we got the horrendous Superman Returns. What missed potential...

Was it Bryan Singer' Superman. cos that didn't help Brandon Routh

No, it was Brett Ratner/McG adoption of JJ Abrams Superman script - think Superman origin meets Independence Day style Alien invasion. It was, basically, a huge-scale popcorn film in vein of Raimi's first Spider-man movie. It probably would have scored a 60% on RT but been a top 10 all-time biggest hit had it been made for 2004. Anthony Hopkins was cast as Jor-el, Robert Downey Jr as Lex Luthor, and Shia LaBuff as Jimmy Olsen. Lois Lane was not cast. They offered the role to Hartnett 2x and declined, as did MANY others - Ashton Kutcher, Paul Walker, etc. WB was desperate to get Supes going so they chose the person they thought had best bankability - Josh Hartnett - and gave him the biggest offer ever at $100 million. They thought it was too good to pass up...but he did. Summer 2004, WB even tried to get him and Michael Bay as a package but both declined. They threw their hands in the air and hired Bryan Singer - who was in a pissing contest with Fox over X-men 3-  to make the unmarketable "Superman meets The Notebook" film. The difference in commercial performance could not have been bigger. It is all detailed in the 2008 book Hollywood Vs. Superman.

This does relate to THE BATMAN because we are, finally, about to see what happens when a highly famous "heartthrob" takes on an iconic role with Pattinson. Pattinson has earned himself a reputation for having a lot of artistic integrity over the last few years so that is definitely helping too, but he is absolutely a unique draw for this kind of role at this point. Lots of women aged 25-35 are no doubt #TeamBruce
