Is it bad that I'm not excited for either this film or Sonic 3? I think both film franchises are terrible.

I never saw the 2019 film because it looked so empty and soulless. I tried watching Sonic on streaming and gave up halfway through.

I'm not moved by what I've seen so far but I don't think nostalgia should be underestimated. It's a holiday family release and probably gonna be a more agreeable option with grandparents than Sonic; also I don't want to completely rule out Barry Jenkins knowing what he's doing.

That's what people said about Chloe Zhao as well

Sonic 3 will eat it alive.

Domestically, very likely. Overseas, Lion King will win. Anyway none of these are my most anticipated Christmas movie, that goes to The War of the Rohirrim.

And she made one of my favorite MCU movies of all time, so I'm curious if this will be the same.(probably not)

If people are excited for this, good for them. The Lion King has somewhat interesting lore, but I don't know if this particular is interesting enough to go see.

I will personally be watching Sonic 3.

Not interested in this one bit. Could not make it through 5 minutes of Lion King 2019 . It was like the most boring nature doc ever where the animals talk. The fact it made as much as it did shows how undemanding audiences can be sometimes.

I know I may be in the minority but this is one of my most anticipated movies of the year to see.  I enjoyed the 2019 Lion King and have re watched it multiple times with enjoyment.  Is it as good as the animated, no but I do like the technology and there still is nostalgia for what is one of my favorite movies.  I am looking forward to the first trailer and learning more about the plot.

Not me. As a Tolkien fan, if it not based directly on the work of Tolkien, it's fanfic.

Yeah, I am a purjist when it comes to Tolkien. So shoot me.

I don't find any of the 3 big animated films appealing.

You’re not alone. I also really did like Jon Favreau’s take of TLK. First time when I saw it and I still rewatch it every time when I’m in a good “Lion King” mood. It’s not the 1994 version (which that is a masterpiece of a movie), but I liked it more than fine. 👩🏻‍💼

Seems like the hate that movie got and gets even to this day & age, are from those who really never liked the lesser Disney remakes to begin with, or just were so frustrated by it’s existence. I do get why certain are not fans of the 2019 version and that’s fine. More power to them. But the way the internet treats that film is almost like it’s the “Disney Remake” equivalent of Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender movie”, though not as severely hated and disposable as that one. Like, if anyone’s allowed an unpopular opinion about liking TLK (2019), that would be going against the popular opinion.

I checked both the critical and audience reception for The Lion King (2019) on Rotten Tomatoes. While the 52% critical score for the film is a bit more meh and “run of the mill” for a Disney remake, the audience score is at a high 88% miraculously.

This film though seems to be in an interesting situation where unlike the last TLK-film, by the premise of it…this one doesn’t really sound like a beat for beat same film and instead is a prequel about one of the most iconic and popular characters from the entire TLK-franchise, Mufasa.

And while it’s not going to make anywhere near the numbers of the previous film, it’ll do fine. Not a massive hit, but not a massive bomb either. And we don’t know exactly how much better or worse (or even a similar quality) than the last film, critics and audience will think of this. Maybe we’ll like it or dislike it more than TLK (2019).

It’s more like a “wait and see” type of situation for this one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I understand, also a massive Tolkien fan here. I've read almost every book there is of Middle Earth (Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, Children of Hurin) and I just love this world so much that I will take every opportunity that I have to revisit it (even if it is not 100% faithful).

I obviously loved the LOTR trilogy, I thought the Hobbit trilogy was pretty strong although with some unnecessary additions and I personally was fine with the Rings of Power show although they need to pick up their pace on future seasons. The War of the Rohirrim being animated and with an anime style like animation peaked my interest quite a bit.

I think anyone saying that a Lion King movie releasing in the holiday season will come close to flopping is kidding themselves. Will it reach the heights of the first movie? Absolutely not. But I think this is the 2024 release with the best shot at reaching a Billion. Lion King iconography and name recognition has insane reach. The broadway show and the remake has granted this franchise cross generational relevancy that's basically unmatched. There's like 4 generations of kids that have grown up on this stuff at this point.

I can name a number of "Can't Miss" sequels to very sucessful films that failed at the box office.

TO be honest, I see this doing another Mary Poppins Returns; it does well but not what THe Mouse expected.
