Something going on at Universal.  The Black Phone was supposed to go on sale tomnorrow and now it isn't.

I just noticed this too, all the showtimes that were about to go on sale are now gone where I am. Wonder if it's getting moved in light of recent events (given its "children in distress" premise).

Didn’t even think about it. Either way, I think August is better for it anyways.

August 12 would be fine but Universal has Beast (another star vehicle thriller) opening the week after that. I'm guessing they could always try September, which is low on horror aside from Salem's Lot.

That's late. But will be easier to judge I guess.

Encanto's presales started a week before release. Bob's Burgers was like 8 days. I guess these super short windows is what Disney's doing for their animated movies now? Which like...I guess that's fine? They can do what they want I guess?

Could also be that they're trying to sort out the IMAX/Dolby screens for the movie since Jurassic World will still be going strong a week later.

I guess WED has like 1500+ tix sold.

Only 4 shows. 527.

Could explain where some of the Thurs day numbers went to. Either those who really want to see first it went for Wed, or they waited till friday (again thats when a lot of the prestige screens pop up for sale).  Certainly interesting to see how numbers move about.

Kudos for doing a Canada wide Wed count-I admit I never thought about going outside of Ontario (which is totally on me lol). Interesting numbers

Yep, that is why.  Pausing due to the events in Uvalde yesterday.  Smart and classy move by them.

It isn't moving, just tickets on sale pushed back out of respect.

I mean, it's not like they can move it even if they wanted to. July has Minions 2 and the domestic release of Nope, while August has Beast and international releases of Nope.

Still, I honestly won't be surprised if they reduce the scale of the release after the shitshow that went down in the US yesterday. Less screens and a lower marketing budget, maybe?

No.  Zero chance.  There is no reason to scale it down.

I also want to re-iterate to not forget early private and corporate events for Top Gun: Maverick.  They were allowed to start as early as 8am today (Wednesday) all the way up through the public release at 3pm on Thursday.  All of these will get rolled into Friday's numbers anbd they will not be insignificant.

The early buyouts like these took a huge hit since March 2020 and this is the first time they are back at a pre-pandemic level.

Eh, movies have lost their release dates at the 11th hour due to unforeseen circumstances plenty of times before. Big Trouble and Collateral Damage being pulled from their late September/early October releases immediately after 9/11 and the Spring 2020 exodus during the rise of COVID among the more notable delays.

I had The Black Phone as one of the potential breakouts of the summer but now, I dunno. Doesn't seem like the right time to really push a "child in jeopardy" thriller (albeit one with supernatural elements) on the public. Good news for Nope taking advantage of the paucity of appealing horror flicks in the market, I suppose.

I don't think it affects it at all, especiall when it isn't released for another month.

The new on sale date is May 31st.

There's nothing in The Black Phone suggesting any direct co-relation with the tragedy

It's radically different than an airplane accident movie after 9/11 where the link is obvious

Black Phone have children but nothing to do with guns / schools / mental issues.

So yeah, it's nice to delay the sales a bit, but the movie? Nonsense, they're right.
