I noticed something odd when running No Way Home, so I decided to take a look at showtimes for next weekend.

Full weekend

TC - 1,010

MTC1 - 193

MTC2 - 194

MTC3 - 323

Shows - 8,724

PLF - 1,799

Nothing out of the ordinary there.  But when I look at the breakdown...

Movie TC MTC1 MTC2 MTC3 Shows PLF
NWH Th 942 189 177 299 1,777 484
NWH Fr 890 186 191 300 2,391 650
NWH Sa 135 0 0 33 419 0
NWH Su 869 185 188 293 2,338 665

What's going on Saturday??

I don’t want to speak out of turn, so I’ll just say my sources tell me it’s not exclusive to NWH, and details should be coming out no later than Monday (it’s a good thing 😉)

Yeah, September 3rd is empty across the board at all the theaters I'm tracking. You can buy tickets for NWH or Jaws or Honk for Jesus on any other day that weekend except the 3rd. I have to assume there's some sort of protest or boycott happening, because that is super weird.

You can buy private watch parties for September 3 at a number of the theaters I've checked out but nothing on sale for the movies coming out that weekend that day yet. Maybe it's a glitch in the systems, who knows.

Probably the most likely reason.

If a protest happened, it would make more sense if it was just Regal or AMC, not both.

The Office Relax GIF

The reality is I'm now on the outside of the industry looking in, which means 1) while I may "know" things from contacts, I don't usually have have access to full details and 2) last thing I want to do is get anyone in trouble for leaking not-yet-public information. So again, from what I have been told, that tickets are not currently on sale for Sat 9/3 is a GOOD THING, nothing to panic about - theaters will be open - and expect some kind of announcement in a few days

Yep. $3 movie tix on Sep 3. National Cinema Day.

This is amazing.
Now studios will really fight for screens that weekend cause it could be a boon. $3 tickets, sure, but packed houses at that price can still make a dent for a film like Thor or Nope that is on its last legs.

The Invitation, counted today at 11am EST for Thursday, August 25:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 42 (3 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 4 (2 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 6 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 3 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 7 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
27 (3 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 87 (5 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 176.
Up good 83% since Monday.
Comps (all on Wednesday for Thursday): The Forever Purge had 168 sold tickets,

The Invisible Man had 628 sold tickets

and Beast had 218 sold tickets.

The Invitation, counted today at 11am EST for Friday, August 26:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 54 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 6 (8 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 7 (5 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 4 (3 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 7 (4 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
26 (8 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 63 (6 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 167.
Up very good 92% since Monday (but of course on a low level).
Comps (all counted on Wednesday for Friday): Ready or Not (8M OW but it started on Wednesday so I guess normally it would have reached 10M) had 186 sold tickets,

Beast (11.6M OW) had 202 sold tickets,

Malignant (5.4M OW) had 167 sold tickets,

The Night House had 72 sold tickets,

Old (16.9M OW) had 262 sold tickets

and The Invisible Man (28.2M OW) had 628 (indeed the same number).

Idk, the jumps are decent
but the best comp probably is Ready or Not and its presales are a bit worse at the moment.

Three Thousand Years of Longing counted today at 11am EST for Thursday, August 25:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 19 (3 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 11 (4 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 3 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 0 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
120 (2 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 41 (3 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 194.

Up ok 52% since Monday.
Comps (both counted on Wednesday for Thursday): The Lost City had on Wednesday for Thursday 520 sold tickets

and Mr. Malcom's List had 15 sold tickets in 4 theaters.

Cyrano had 87 sold tickets on Thursday for Thursday (= final counting).

Three Thousand Years of Longing counted today at 11am EST for Friday, August 26:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 8 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 16 (8 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 4 (5 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (3 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 2 (4 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
78 (8 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 31 (6 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 139.

Up also ok 48% since Monday.
Comps (both counted on Wednesday for Friday): The Lost City had 519 sold tickets

and Mr. Malcolm's List had 31 sold tickets in 4 theaters.
Cyrano had on Thursday for Friday 104 sold tickets.

The presales still aren't bad but the sales are very uneven (the AMC Metreon is good for more than half of the total tickets). No film with mass appeal I guess.

Twin Cities Thursday Previews Report:

Three Thousand Years of Longing (T-2):

Day: T-2 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 11 theaters 23 25 106 2881 3.68

Comp:

1.37x Beast: $1.27 M

Lost a bit of ground to Beast, but it's still selling decently here (compared to my very meager expectations).

The Invitation (T-2):

Day: T-2 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 11 theaters 27 1 27 3512 0.77

Comp:

0.35x Beast: $320k

Doing horribly in Minnesota so far.

Twin Cities Thursday Previews Report:

Three Thousand Years of Longing:

Day: T-1 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 12 theaters 25 24 130 2986 4.35

Comp:

1.2x Beast: $1.11M

The Invitation (T-1):

Day: T-1 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 14 theaters 37 44 71 4755 1.49

Comp:

0.66x Beast: $610k

Finally a good day for The Invitation, I see no reason for this to be pre-sales heavy but it's still a nice jump. Still don't see this crack $10 M from my numbers, but I think this will underindex in the Midwest anyway. For Three Thousand Years, meh pace.

That worked extremely well here in the UK earlier this year, and it was just one chain that did it.

Sing 2 sold out every single showing at my local that day and it had already been out for 5 full weekends.

With the box office looking to be boring the next few weeks, I decided to check the holiday schedule after Shazam's delay and this is what December looks like now:

2: Violent Night

9: House Party

14-16: Avatar, A Man Called Otto, wide expansion for Spoiler Alert

21-Christmas Day: Puss in Boots, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, wide expansion for Women Talking, wide expansion for Empire of Light? (I assume Searchlight will be bowing it in limited on the 9th), Babylon in limited (expands everywhere January 6).

Honestly, this looks much more manageable than last Christmas (where in addition to Spider-Man you also had Matrix 4, Sing 2, West Side Story, etc. fighting for screen space) and many Decembers before. Month is clearly set up for Avatar domination with other movies looking to work as viable counterprogramming.
