I for one am shocked SHOCKED to discover Disney are petty douchebags.

You’re telling the company that tried to trademark a holiday name are complete scum, that’s unbelievable.

Euphoria youngster Jacob Elordi as Superman

Stop trying to make Elordi happen. No one wants Elordi.

Bad drops for both Men and Downton Abbey 2, both down around -65% in their second weekends despite decent critic reviews and the holiday boost. Both join Firestarter (which just fell -85% in its third weekend) as the second and third wide-release flops of the summer already.

Meanwhile, The Bad Guys is at around a 3.5x multiplier.

Downton Abbey is cheap enough that it'll turn a profit. But yeah, no third movie.

Superman has the Americana angle and literally checks every box. Base level of fame is massive, major appeal to young and old, male and female, sci-fi and modern, urban and rural. It just needs to be done right. Imagine what we would be predicting if the below was taking place right now:

Concept:

JJ Abrams directing a mainstream, traditional Superman origin film with Euphoria youngster Jacob Elordi as Superman and a slew of veterans and names around him major roles.

Release

The only major Christmas release of 2023 now that Rogue Squadron clearly isn't happening.

Marketing

Aggressive, bright, action packed, Americana and military presence- think Marvel or prime Bay/Bruckheimer.

Reception

Imagine if it was a FORCE AWAKENS/STAR TREK type of crowd pleaser.

An opening in the $150m range followed by a large multiplier is totally possible.

I misread the 100m figure and edited.

Exactly you just need strong rural representation in the movies with strong presence of loving America. He would need to say his tag line of the American way.....it could do gangbusters domestically.

TBH the film ends in such a way that a third film isn't really necessary but I wouldn't be surprised if we see Peacock, Masterpiece and ITV team up for a one-off special in lieu of a third film.

Not a shot.

100M tickets would be $1.1-1.2B at this point. There's no way in hell any Superman movie is getting near that. Not even half that.

If the film has good 3D / IMAX sales then the box office is much higher than that.

He's actually been cast for a major role in Emerald Fennell's next movie. But it remains to be seen if the "let's try and make the Euphoria actors into stars" belief that's going around Hollywood right now ends up having much of a shelf life or not.

I’m not denying he’s popular but like he’s not even the top 3 most popular actors from that show.

Superman? Did the Donner one sell over 100M tickets? What the? Aren't Batman and Spider-man much more popular than Superman? For it to be a superhero movie it would literally have to be some ridiculous Marvel/DC crossover. No just plain Superman movie is ever coming close to that. The well received Donner Supes didn't even come close to Burton's Batsy, no?

By the way, I really like Superman and Superman II a lot. Nothing against the character just don't see a Superman movie doing 1.2B+ DOM at all.

Isnt it worse then just Thursday?   Revenue is being counted for 7 calander days Tues-Monday for TG:M "4-day memorial weekend" isnt it?  Kind of a farce if they take a victory lap on that imo.   Edit: Its a farce if they needed the Tues/Wed on top of Thursday numbers.   If they beat them but not by pirates Thursday numbers they should just keep quite.

Yeah, this is a great opening for Top Gun 2 but it's not in the same stratosphere as the Pirates 3 opening...especially given that Pirates 3 opened right after two massive openers in the same month. May 2007 was pretty insane.

The 1978 Superman sold about 57 million tickets. Batman 89 sold around 63 million tickets. TDK and Spidey '02 each sold around 70 million tickets.

I don’t think any CBM could do 1.2B DOM for that matter, solo or team up.

Weak Saturday’s cross the board so far. I guess whatever mystery inflation affected we’d and th also lingered some fri

Possibly, but Saturday looks weak even when compared prior Sat - week/week drops are fairly high. Appears Top Gun just took away too many shows from the other holdovers, limiting grossing potential, or maybe some people are just enjoying the holiday weekend/activities and not spending it at theaters

For example, last week Bad Guys made ~$250/show, and current estimate put its at ~$175 - that's a significant drop off when you factor in the holiday bump and dumping a lot of the lower preforming individual shows
