Wish | Walt Disney Animation Studios | November 22, 2023 | Chris Pine plays a baddie DILF, new trailer has dropped, reactions are reactions

I do actually think both of them are decently catchy, my initial concern with Thanks I Get was honestly that it was too catchy, in that soulless pop hit way. Its verse though has more nuance and gives a cathartic build-up to the repetitive chorus that makes it feel more impactful in a way that the 15 second sample didn't. It also has a more conventional structure than This Wish's which I do think might be too reliant on its chorus to make it a hit.

I think everyone just had to get expectations adjusted, I admit I was also expecting a more dramatic villain song a la Mother Knows Best or Be Prepared, but this seems more like the movie's "You're Welcome".

What's with all these songs being so busy, both lyrically and melodically? The best Disney songs of movies past were easily sing-alongable. "I Wish" and "This is the Thanks I Get?!" both sound like they're trying to copy the songs of Encanto without understanding the only song that really took off was "We Don't Talk About Bruno" which had a very catchy hook.

I get what you’re saying, but honestly Encanto songs have incredibly respectful YouTube numbers outside of Bruno.

I have friends with kids, and the only song I ever hear about from Encanto is "We Don't Talk About Bruno."

In fact, on the Disney Music VEVO account, the "We Don't Talk About Bruno" lyric video has 54M views. The second most watched lyric video from the same film is "Surface Pressure" at 17M views.

The staying power of Encanto is the culture and the story, as well as the aforementioned song about Bruno. Wish takes place in a fictional kingdom, and doesn't seem to be about a specific culture, so great music is way more important for this film than it was for Encanto.

Not that great music isn't important, but they are going for an Iberian peninsula vibe with this.

The discourse over the music though has made it clear that this is pretty much all down to personal taste. One person's catchy is another's forgettable, and it's simply still too soon to know just how well either of these songs are going to connect, although from what I've seen in their YouTube comments (which admittedly are probably screened a lot given they're being allowed on videos related to a kids movie), the reception seems far more positive than it is here.

I will say Bruno came out of nowhere, like even Disney at first didn't think highly enough about the song to submit it for Oscar consideration.

Don't get me wrong, they're not bad songs. I'm not knocking the quality of the songs, but historically, the Disney films that endure are the ones with music that is great for karaoke. Neither song feels karaoke-safe.

The Little Mermaid, for instance, wasn't a huge hit when it first came out in 1989, but it's remembered fondly because just about every song in the film is memorable and sing-alongable!

The Little Mermaid signaled the rebirth of Disney animation and subsequent films built on that very positive response.   Menken & Ashman were a gift but it wasn't just about the music.

It was also an absolute monster on VHS. That’s where TLM became a phenomenon.

Ngl, I actually think the whole song is quite good. Also sounds like it advances the plot so I guess spoiler alert.

Fun song, You're Welcome vibes here, somehow.

If this movie ends up a critically acclaimed hit this thread will go down as a case study for the cynical fan culture that results in all these kneejerk negative overreactions to promotional material

I mean people can have opinions about what's been out and if it's critically acclaimed doesn't mean people here will like it.

As for the song,  I still wish it wasn't poppy but it delving into what it does makes me laugh.

What you say about the song personally being too poppy for you is fine, but others have been making assumptions about a lack of potential to appeal to the masses and/or artistic effort on Disney's part based on personal negative opinions about the campaign so far, and it's that kind of stuff that always makes these threads start becoming miserable places to visit.

It's a Disney animated movie.  There hasn't been one that isn't fresh on RT since Cars 2, everyone has been above 70% RT since then. The odds were always in its favor that it will get good/great reviews.

It's growing on me a bit more than Tuesday now that there's context. Mixed on this one, seems they're going between a cross of Youre Welcome and Gaston but still not sure about the pop decision as it feels a bit generic especially when it builds to a sinister motif. That said, think it's easier to sing along to than This Wish even though I prefer that one over this. Glad it wasn't a How Bad Can I Be monstrosity.

I remember when early reviews came out that Moana's music was sub par.  I'll wait and see though I'm not crazy about Pine's singing voice - not a lot of character there.

Weren't a lot of Encanto's songs also trashed here when its OST first came out? I think the songs in Disney musicals generally hit better once you understand it in the context of the film. I remember not liking Where You Are when I first listened to it, but it grew on me a lot once I actually saw Moana. Waiting on a Miracle also grew on me more after watching Encanto.
