NIGHT SWIM | 01.05.2024 | Universal | final gross: $32,494,740

Did Kerry Condon or Wyatt Russell even do any promo for this? M3GAN proved that "first movie on the first weekend of the year" horror movies don't have to suck (and can actually be pretty good) but clearly it was an exception.

If reception is really that bad, then I take back what I said. So much for that little bit of optimism I showed. The more news that I hear about this movie, the more I think that Universal picked this January spot just in case it crashed and burned too.

To think a year ago Kerry was in the running for Best Supporting Actress...

This was a pretty average film. Nothing to write home about. Typical January horror outing. M3GAN this is not.

I will say that the complaints about it being slow didn't affect me too much. In fact, I had no idea that this film was roughly an hour and a half long when ignoring the credits, so the film was shorter than it felt. Its only hook to bring people in theaters is its premise. Otherwise, it had nothing unique to offer. This is a $5 Tuesday kind of movie if you absolutely have a remote desire to see it.

It was just too cliched and dull.

I hate this “fingers are too bloody so the phone won’t swipe properly” thing that’s become a new trope. (It was fine the very first time in Scream 5, but then Thanksgiving and now this. It’s the new “no service”.)

Some nice cinematography though and the family are at least likeable.

2/5

This was god awful. I never walk out of films but this one really tested my patience.

Easily the worst film I've watched in theatre in years.

It's just flat out boring. The pacing makes it feel 3 hours long. There is almost no actual horror here. The story is very poor. When it tried to get serious and scary I almost burst out laughing because of how poorly done it was.

What a train wreck.

I know this doesn't say much because the weekend numbers have been low, but the drops have been good for a "terrible" movie.

It’s probably being helped by the lack of other horror movies, currently or on the horizon. I don’t even know what’s the next horror movie to get a wide release, there’s nothing already being promoted for this year that looks exciting. Horror fans might just check out Night Swim.

That's what I thought as well. IMAGINARY by Lionsgate is the next wide horror release on March 8th.

It's a really barren market place currently so everything is having decent drops for the most part.

This has made about the same as Thanksgiving on a similar budget and that got a sequel, so I am sure they'll be happy to break even/make profit on home market. But I don't see a sequel coming with the reception it got.
